Interviews: Children Of The Void
We have had the opportunity to interview the Melodic Death Metal band Children Of The Void from Norway. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or come out just like that?
Runar: The band name is a 2 parter, I have always found the words «the void» cool, and so it became sort of a mix of «its just cool» to a little philosophic doodle that we are all made from stardust. Space in general was the inspiration for it. And with this at the bottom, we named it Children Of The Void. (The NOR came afterward as we found a technopunk band in the USA with the name Children Of The Void, so we added our countrycode to it).
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
The reason we wanted to play in this genre is that it's the same type of music that brought us into heavy music ourselves. (Or at least Runar). It's a combination of being able to use our creative drive in any way we want and making music we enjoy.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Yes, all of the band members knew each other from being regulars in the Bergen, Norway metal scene the last 4-5 years. Me (Runar) and the drummer (Eivind) played together in the same band for about 3,5 years and decided the music in the band was not quite what we wanted. So we «broke out» and started this project with musicians from bands we have previously played with and friends in the local metal scene.
4. Each band member favourite band?
Yes, the list goes AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Exodus, Slipknot, and the Devin Townsend Project.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Musically it's just listening to a lot of different music and then getting inspired by what others do. Music nowadays is mostly borrowing stuff from others anyhow (jokingly).
As for the lyrics it is from our own experiences and meanings mostly but we «manifest it» through a authorlence writing our music in a fictional universe.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our first gig actually was just this last weekend, at Hulen in Bergen, Norway. The crowd loved it and actually asked for an encore.
7. Where would you like to act?
Our goal is to be able to live off the music so we’d like to play everywhere really, but for now, goals that stand are Germany, Poland, and the UK.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Pretty much any of our idols from metal, right now we’re trying to get a vocalist from a large Melodeath band to feature on one of our songs from the upcoming album.
We’re also proud to already have had the honor of Once Awake guitarist and vocalist, Frode and Hans Petter featuring on 2 of our tracks.
As for the future we’d love to have any of the following bands featuring with us: In Flames, Soilwork, Arch Enemy, At The Gates, Orbit Culture, Eyes Wide Open and the list goes on.
9. Whom not?
None in particular, but it wouldn't make sense for us to feature any artists that are pop for example, but we don't know really.
The only thing that would stop us from featuring someone in our music would have to be if they are bullies, racists, or anything else like that.
We’re proud supporters of Metalheads against bullying and have zero tolerance for any kind of that sh*t where you put other people down.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Runar: I can only answer for myself, but I have never really had a problem with stage fright. As a teacher, I have helped kids with stagefright and what helped the most was 1 thing, starting the «performance» in front of small groups, either in front of friends and family or «strangers». For some people, stagefright is larger in front of family and friends.
Eivind: For me, it was kinda a “practice makes perfect” kinda thing. I was most definitely stressed the first couple of times performing. But in time you find out what works for you. Just never give up on your dreams, and work hard!
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
We draw a lot of inspiration from several different bands, for example, Parkway Drive, Rammstein, and In Flames are important as to how we developed our own sound. We used what we thought was «cool» to build something of our own.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Runar: The weirdest thing I have been asked from a fan, well, there was a fan that asked if I could kiss her, that's the weirdest so far at least.
13. What do you think of your fans?
As of yet, we don't have that many fans, but we are ever grateful to them for wanting to listen to the music that we make!
14. Something to add?
We just want to thank everyone that has listened to our music! We have many plans for the future and we hope to see you at the next gig! And thanks for this awesome interview!
