Interviews: Mortal Coil
This is a new interview with the Thrash Metal/Death Metal band Mortal Coil from Croatia. Check out the interview and follow the band on their YOUTUBE CHANNEL.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or came out just like that?
Mortal Coil name for the band came from Carcass album "Heartwork", which had a song named "This Mortal Coil". At that time, it seemed natural, as we are Carcass fans, to pay some tribute to them.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Well, this genre came naturally to us, as we were all listening to similar genres. Yes, we were also in Black, Doom, Gothic, we were exploring everything, but Trash, Death, and Melodic Death were our favorites.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Yes, we all grew up in the same city, few of us in the same neighborhood.
4. Each band member favourite band?
Boris (vocals): Amorphis
Dario (bass/guitars): Iron Maiden
Andrija (guitars): Carcass
Rino (drums): Sadist
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Our first songs written had love and war themes built-in, as we were affected with that mostly, Black Crow / Black Heart is actually a love (betrayed) song, while Eyeless Sight for example is a song dedicated to our love for metal music When Darkest skies (will be published soon) is a classic anti-war song. Not every song has a message, some are written at the moment, depending on mood.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was in our city, Zadar.
7. Where would you like to act?
We have no specific place we would like to perform, everywhere where the atmosphere is good, it is good for us.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Uh, that is a heavy one... Well, today it is hard to say, really, there are many excellent bands we would Like to share the stage with, Dario's first pick is Stratovarius.
9. Whom not?
No one, really. We have bands we love and those who are not our favorites, but we respect everyone and could play with all.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Well, fortunately, we had no stage fright cases, we were nervous a few times, usually till the end of the first song, and then it is all easier, the atmosphere takes you, and you have no time to think about stage fright. We did have a few mistakes, on stage, broken strings, late entries, but if the public is positive, they forgive things like that, and you go on. Advice for those coming first time on stage, just make sure you practiced a lot, be sure of yourself, go confident... Do not use stimulants, it usually ruins everything.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Bands that inspired us most, it all started with Metallica's Kill 'em All, followed by Megadeth, Iron Maiden and then we dug deeper, Carcass, Amorphis, Sepultura, Edge of Sanity, Cemetery, Entombed, Tiamat, Anathema, Solitude Aeturnus, Therion.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Once we played live in one bunker, the stage was half a meter from the floor, a small stage, and one fan asked our guitarist what is the time while playing the Riff. You can imagine how close we were to the crowd, and how we joked about it with our guitarist. You played so poorly that they even did not notice you.
13. What do you think of your fans?
We Always preferred smaller audiences, smaller gigs, where you can get personal with your fans. It is impossible to know all your fans, but surely we try to know and interact with many of them.
14. What do you think of our site?
Your site is awesome, you are doing a great job of promoting metal music to fans around the world. Continue, good luck!
