Left In The Wake - Interview

Hey, Breathing The Core fans, here we bring you a new interview to the Melodic Hardcore band Left In The Wake from Spain. We have nothing more to say, so enjoy this interview and also like their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Ha Ha the name of the band came about when our sound was a bit more like our influences at the time such as, The Black Dahlia Murder, Dream theatre, Lamb of God etc, very metal… We tried a few names and we were at one stage, in danger of being called “Bud Spencer’s right foot” or something like that, (Bud Spencer is an Italian Action star) Left in the Wake was the only name we could agree on because it sounded metal and it stuck.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

It wasn’t so much that we wanted to play this genre, it’s more that we started feeling more comfortable playing this sort of music, I feel that with metal, it’s hard to get certain emotions across in the music when it’s all riffs and Breakdowns so we as a band wanted to write music that the lyrics could follow seamlessly and not sound too forced. I would also say that we all have very different musical tastes but we all love bands such as Counterparts, Misery signals, Hundredth, Architects etc so I think it’s natural to be influenced by that sort of genre.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

We all had bands but nothing too serious, I lived in England and played in a few bands before coming to Madrid, I looked online to see if there were any bands looking for a singer and I found an advert that Hans (the drummer) had put up, I then met the original formation of the band that at the time, included a Keyboard player (Ana) and another guitarist (Juanjo) who was later replaced by Carlos, they all played, and still do, in other bands / side projects. I think it’s important to have other musical outlets so you don’t get bored or negatively influence your own sound by adding things that probably won’t work for the band.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Baroness, Misery signals, Counterparts, American nightmare (give up the ghost), Pink floyd

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

I feel that the state of the world at the moment is enough to influence anyone to write a meaningful song, you only have to look out your window to see how negatively everyone is being affected by decisions made by people we don’t know. We try as a band to write songs that convey a mixture of emotions, usually starting with anger and desperation to finishing with some hopeful thoughts that contradict the original meaning of the song, The music also has that feeling of hope imbedded in the melodies, I think it’s the use of Majors and not just minors help to give the songs their own identities and their catchy memorable parts.

6. Where was your last gig?

Sala Barracudas in Madrid.

7. Where would you like to act?

We are currently booking mini tours in and around Spain, Portugal and probably towards France, we were lucky enough to play in England about 2 years ago but I think for us we would love to go back with the new material and do a tour across the UK…. That would be amazing!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

There are some great bands from the UK we would love to play with such as Crooks, Stallone, ERRA, Napoleon, Climates and obviously While she sleeps would be awesome.

9. Whom not?

Ummmm Hard to say because I don’t think we’re at that level where we can pick and choose who not to play with, It’s hard sometimes to have to turn down shows because we have played too often in certain areas such as Madrid in our case, but we usually try and play with bands that are similar to us or at least in the same genre.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright?

Any tip for beginners on how to beat that? Ummm not really, we used to make the mistake of looking at each other a lot while playing and not knowing how to interact with audiences, but I think the most important thing to do is to let the audience decide if they like you or not, bands that hassle the crowds to move forwards throughout a whole set can be tiring to watch so our advice is, enjoy it, trust in your bandmates and if there are mistakes, don’t dwell on them, you can only get better.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

I would say bands like Misery signals, Poison the well, come back kid, the ghost inside, converge etc they’re the bands that have been around for years and go from strength to strength, they know how to change with times to stay relevant, how to market themselves without “Selling out” and have all managed to maintain their work ethic and original distinctive sounds.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Nothing really, just signing CD’s or taking pictures with people but Fan is not really a word like to use, I think the day we have “Fans” is the day we have lost our connection with what made us want to do this in the first place. Generally we put ourselves at the same level as anyone who walks through the entrance of the venue and just try to be as friendly as possible.

13. What do you think of your fans?

People who like our music are awesome ha ha, we get people saying that they’re usually into heavier stuff but like our music because of the variation of melodic, technical and hard styles, people who like our music tend to be musicians themselves and that’s a really gratifying feeling.

14. What do you think of our site?

It’s cool, easy to use and has everything clearly marked, it would be cool to have a band of the day link on the “home page” to go straight to a bands “Bandcamp” and an interview with them or something but yeah I really like it.

15. Something to add?

Nothing really, we just hope people will give us a chance, get the album and listen to it loud. We’re going to be touring around this year off the back of our new album – The Banner We Follow – and we hope to see you all there, get in contact with us if you want us to come and play and most importantly, come talk to us, The beards are just beards, we’re nice people underneath   Our new single “The banner we follow” is out now and you can check it out clicking this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTGSPadZ0BE  The new album is out on 1st of March from Bandcamp, Spotify, Youtube etc so yeah, we hope you all like it!
