Nevada Rose - Paint Me In Light (2014) (Review)
Introduction
"When you blend pulsating electronic dance hooks seamlessly with elements of hardcore, metal, and pop you’ll have yourself the album Paint Me In Light from the New Jersey band Nevada Rose.". No, it's not Electronic Hardcore Metal, it's Nevada Rose, and their first LP, Paint Me In Light. If you want to locate them in the post-hardcore scene, it's like a mix of That's Outrageous and Abandon All Ships. So, yeah, that's pretty cool. If you want to check a song from them, go check 609.
Everyone say they're awesome live, I'm not here to promote but if they come next to your house, go see them and let them a chance. Their stuff is made for live (Cool breakdowns, electronic parts and aggressive dubstep).
Review
Vocals
I have to say that I'm in love with their screams. The fact that they have a powerful screamer, let them use it for cool or great breakdowns (1:29, Morals is really sick !). Really, this isn't the "average scream", they have really something different. And that's sweet to hear.
I have mixed feelings about the cleans, really inequal. They aren't bad at all (And I don't think someone could tell this) but the auto tune isn't always used perfectly. So, just listen to "Scars To Prove"'s beginning, you can hear he doesn't need auto tune. I'm not "against" using auto tune on cleans, I would say it's not my cup of tea, sometimes it's cool but sometimes, it's not needed or badly used. For exemple, I love 1:10 - 1:59 part, but I disliked "Murals"' ending. It's just a personal opinion.
Overall, this album has cool singing. Sometimes, cool, sometimes great, catchy, and some parts I personally didn't enjoy (But it's like 2 parts approximately, not more). I LOVE "Stonybrook" intro and I think it's a nice part to hear what they can do . If I had to compare, I would say that cleans remind me of Tom DeGrazia (That's Outrageous), and screams, David Stephens (We Came As Romans). Lyrics are really highlighted by the instrumental, that's all I would ask to a band, to have something like a cohesion, a coherence between vocals and instrumental. Lyrics aren't really original, but they're well used.
Instrumental
I didn't expect that from them, 'cause all I heard was "609" (This isn't a bad song at all, but it's not as great instrumentally speaking as some other songs), but they did some fucking great intros. "Vanity" is to me their best song, just listen the beginning, I'm sure you'll dig it.
It's in the instrumental that Nevada Rose shows they have something special. Mix electronic and metal, already done, but not the way they do. If they want to make a full electronic song, they'll do it, "Meet Me At The Midnight", but if they want to be aggressive, they can "Stonybrook". My opinion ? I rather hear some heavy stuff, so Storybrook", "Vanity" and "The Unrest" are my favorites.
They surely know how to breakdown. You think it's easy to do a great breakdown ? You're wrong. And it's in the fact that everyone does it, that it's harder than ever to do a really cool breakdown. "The Unrest"'s ending breakdown is really great, for example.
1:13, "I Was Born Single" is sick. So, no, this is not Jesse Cash that plays guitar, but they have great riffs, and they can use some cool techniques, so that we aren't bored of constant breakdowns and power chords.
Dubstep/electro parts are pretty rad. I don't really have something to say about it, you have to hear by yourself 'cause i think it's really personal.
The main point in music, is that you don't need to do something outstanding, like solos in all songs, to do something cool. It's all in the fact that you can use techniques in a good way. You can do great solos, if they are not accompanied, that would sucks. You need to have coherent songs, and this LP is coherent.
