DSGNS - Interview
Hey, Breathing The Core fans, here we bring you another interview of the Metal/Noisecore band DSGNS from USA, so here you can see and give a like their FACEBOOK PAGE. We have nothing more to say, so enjoy this interview!
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Stephen- We wanted to pick a name that would not put us in a box, at first glance.
Jeremy- I believe we were brainstorming ideas for a good 2-3 weeks when we came up with designs. It's one of those names that sounds cool and doesn't automatically stick you in a particular genre of music, which describes us quite well. Within the first week of writing it out and trying to create imagery around the name, we decided to cut the vowels, and the rest is history.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Stephen-I didn’t have a choice, I didn’t wake up one day and say, I want to be in a band that is aggressive and loud, it chose me, or should I say us. This is how we express ourselves.
Jeremy- I personally like to listen to all types of music, but I would say I favor most things heavy. I think it’s just the combined elements of each member’s style that works perfectly to create what we are.
Jake- This is the hardest question I have ever been asked in an interview. I guess I wanted to play this genre because I am an internally aggressive and frustrated person, like a lot of people, and this helps me deal with it.
Ian-Because it's the only type of music where you could more than likely kill yourself on stage and everyone at the show would probably agree that it was appropriate and fit what was going on at the time in regards to the ferocity.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Stephen- Jeremy and I had known each other for a good while before DSGNS formed. Keith and I had met a month or so before DSGNS, playing in a Judge cover band with mutual friends. Ian and Keith knew of each other from Virginia, and Jake we found on craigslist.
Jeremy- I've known of Stephen for a really long time, and he actually played in Thumbscrew, one of my favorite local (Texas) bands over a decade ago. And I became friends with him shortly after forming a new band with my roommate at the time. Being as Jake was younger than me I didn't really know him before DSGNS started, although come to find out we've had a ton of mutual friends for a really long time. I didn't meet Keith or Ian until they joined.
Jake- My answer is no. But Jeremy, Stephen and I all knew a lot of the same people, but we didn't meet until I joined the band.
4. Each band member favourite band?
Stephen- The Beatles
Jeremy- Norma Jean, Saosin, Mortal Treason
Jake- The Dillinger Escape Plan and recently The Paper Chase.
Ian-Pantera and Deadguy
Keith-Botch
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Stephen- the ups and downs of life, ultimately are what fuels my over all inspiration.
Jeremy- I think the fact of writing new stuff is inspiring in itself. Like that feeling when you just write an awesome riff and it's coming together for the first time at practice. The only thing you want to do is keep writing and getting stoked on it.
Jake- My personal life and life in general. Society, politics, people, etc.
Ian-Guys that wear salmon colored pants, boat shoes, and blazers over v neck t shirts.
Keith-Trying to create that feeling when you hear your favorite song.
6. Where was your last gig?
At red7, with Pushmen, Lone Star Demons, Canyon of the Skull, and Voidstrider.
7. Where would you like to act?
Stephen- Any place that will have us.
Jeremy- I would honestly like to go to the East Coast. Both Keith and Ian are from the Virginia Beach area, so I feel we would have really good presence there.
Jake- I want to play an evening slot at Fun Fun Fun Fest. On the Black Stage, obviously.
Ian-Hellfest in Europe.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Stephen- Metallica circa’89, Queen, Deftones, Zao, UGK and on and on and on, any band on my iPod.
Jeremy- In the last 2 years we've had the pleasure of playing with some of our favorite and amazing bands. Still one that hasn't been scratched off the bucket list... Converge.
Jake- Too many bands to list so I'll pick one that I think everyone would agree on (even though they'rebroken up) - Botch.
Ian-Unbroken and Gorilla Biscuits.
9. Whom not?
Stephen- Mumford and Sons
Jeremy- King810
Jake- Kiss or the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Ian-Any band that features members that have tattoos on their necks and hands, but not on their arms.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Stephen- I personally have not had stage fright too amped up to be scared.
Jeremy-I don't think I’ve ever suffered from stage fright, although occasionally I'll fear my gear is gonna break mid set, but everything seems to always work out. My advice to beginners is to just practice and enjoy what you're doing. If you're passionate about your music, things will just feel natural for you.
Jake- I wouldn't consider it stage fright, but I always get nervous right before we play. My hands always tingle during our first song- it's like that feeling when you see red and blue lights in your rearview mirror. My only tip would be if you like to drink and can still hold yourself i.e. play your damn instrument, drink before you play.
Ian-Get angry...
Keith- Not for a long time. Maybe a little when we are playing a new song for the first time. Just remember that if it was easy, everyone would do it.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Stephen-Too many to list or remember. I am personally inspired by bands from all spectrums of music.
Jeremy- DEP, Norma Jean
Jake- I could say Metallica because without the Justice record, I wouldn't be answering this question. But for the music we write it would probably be American Nightmare, Botch and Dillinger.
Ian-Foo Fighters, Unbroken, Deadguy, DEP, Century and ETID.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Stephen- I have not been asked for anything weird.
Jeremy- I was once asked to take a guys daughter on a date after our set once. He offered to pay for a couple ribeyes too. Still haven't forgiven myself for not taking the steak, haha
Jake- Nothing really, at least not yet.
Ian-My autograph thinking I was in poison the well when I was in a band on tour with them, (Spitfire).
13. What do you think of your fans?
Stephen- Couldn’t thank them enough.
Jeremy- Our fans are awesome, although most of the time they are some of our closest friends. Probably what makes them awesome.
Jake- I appreciate each person out there that considers themselves a fan of us. I love them all!
14. What do you think of our site?
Stephen- I love the site; I think it’s a great way to be exposed to new bands, and it’s a great way for bands to gain some exposure, as well.
Jeremy- I checked it out for the first time a couple weeks ago, and it's awesome to find new bands and tunes to listen to.
Jake- It's great! Sites like yours help bands like us get exposure. That's extremely important and we appreciate all of the press you've given us thus far.
Ian-Great site, simple to use and awesome with how it's very streamlined. Makes it easy to check out a lot of bands in a short amount of time.
15. Something to add?
Stephen- Support the bands you love, like, or find interesting. Buy merch, go to the shows, shoot a bootlegger or just spread the word, every bit helps. Also, be on the look out for our debut full length album coming in the next few months.
Jeremy- Listen to us and give us some feedback. We'd love to see you at the next show!
Jake- Be yourself, don't copy other people, don't compare yourself to other people. And always eat your vegetables.
