This Deafening Whisper - Interview
Hey, Breathing The Core fans, here we bring you another interview of the Metalcore band This Deafening Whisper from France, so here you can see and give a like their FACEBOOK PAGE. We have nothing more to say, so enjoy this interview!
1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Here’s the story : Me, Alban and Nils used to play in another band we created a while ago (when I was in high-school). We had a couple good tunes but no identity whatsoever, we switched from an offspring-like song to a attack-attack basic metalcore one, it was a funny mess ! After years of going nowhere and playing just in front of our friends we decided it was time to step up, we started fresh, new line up, new songs, new identity. In our struggle to find the band name, one specific line of an old song we played came to my mind ‘The wind is getting stronger, this deafening whisper’. And well, I kinda liked the anthithesis between those words, it’s more subtle than deafening silence yet it conveys really well the antagonism between the harshness of metal and of the melodic, calmer parts of our songs. So we decided to go for it !
2.Why did you want to play this genre?
Well, of course this style isn’t only what we listen to but few factors pushed us to go this way. We wanted some heaviness, something that makes the crowds bounce and headbang because this energy is the best parts of playing live I find. Also I found than I had more freedom to compose and mix genres by going this way instead of going full pop, punk rock or full on death metal. I didn’t want to sacrifice the melodies all at once so this sounded like a good compromise. And well, honestly it’s not something we calculated, it just came naturally by grabbing the guitar, recording demos and doing our stuff
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
I’ve met Nils a couple of times before in my living room yep. Ah yeah, I forgot to mention, he’s my brother. Alban joined the previous band, we met on a music forum. Luis used to play in the previous band I mentioned but gave up after awhile, yet we kept in touch and he joined TDW after we released our first EP. Al and Mark were good friends of us for many years, both had a lot of musical experience and it was a no brainer to include them in the band, and I’m so glad we did !
4. Each band member favourite band?
By memory, it would go something like this : Alban: Underoath or BMTH Mark: One Republic Nils: Architects, August burns red Me: August burns red, Muse Luis: Upon a burning body or slipknot Al: Meshuggah
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Most of the time, my main source of inspiration comes from feelings, sensations, abstract ideas or stories. Sometimes it flows and sometimes you really need to dig deep to create something out of it. So I guess watching a movie, hearing a news, reading a book, those would come as big as an influence as listening other bands to a certain extent.
6. Where was your last gig?
We’ve been kind of on a long pause gig-wise, to concentrate on composing, and also because of the line up change. Last one was back in Issy (near Paris) with our buddies from Merge and Chunk. This was right after our East European tour last year.
7. Where would you like to act?
Honestly, touring the US is on the top 5 of my life goals and I know it’s a dream for many of them as well. We’ll try our best to make it come true in 2015 or 2016.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Any of the bands of question 4
9. Whom not?
The metal scene being (unfortunately) too segmented by genres, I guess it wouldn’t be good for us to feature with a death metal band. I do love to listen to them though but I know our melodic side can make some of their audience cringe (for exemple Fit for an Autopsy, I declare war, Carnifex…
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
I guess we’re too proud to admit it amongst us ahah ! So I’ll speak for me, yeah of course I did but it did calm down after some time, when the excitement took over. I guess the best tip I could give is to rehearse the shit out of every songs you’re playing, practice even in pitch black if needed so that on the D day it all flows naturally like clockwork. Also, get yourself your own sound engineer, this removed so much stress to let someone deal with that, someone that knows your songs and your needs, unlike the guy that came with the venue.. My biggest stage frights were when I knew we didn’t practice enough a couple of songs and that we knew the sound was terrible before we played, this ruins the whole fun..
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Even though you might not hear the real influences o
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Oh I don’t know, maybe that Belarus girl asking us to all sign autographs her boobs while her tough bf was staring at us with pure hate in his eyes.. ? Or that drunk guy in Ukraine who asked us to play a Metallica song in exchange for 100€ lol
13. What do you think of your fans?
I have the most respect and gratitude for them all, getting to meet them after the show is always the reward we’re waiting for after each successful show. I love how, despite the wrong misconceptions and clichés some ignorant might have on our musical style, every fans I met are always open, tolerant and fun persons that just let go of their anger in the pit.
14. What do you think of our site?
Love the concept, your design and I discovered a lot of unknown hardcore gems on it !
15. Something to add?
Keep being awesome and promoting small/new/unsigned hardcore bands, we only survive thanks to people like you. See you soon on the road !
