Relevant Anger - Interview
Hey, Breathing The Core fans, here we bring you another interview of the Hardcore Punk band Relevant Anger from USA, so here you can see and give a like their FACEBOOK PAGE. We have nothing more to say, so enjoy this interview!
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Mark (Bass): I joined the band late, name was already set.
Stephen (Drums): I think it’s funny.
Kattan (Vocals): It just came out like that. The reason why chose the name was because I tend to use the word ''relevant'' a lot and the name we had before, King, was overused by many other bands.
Dustin (Guitar): Relevant Anger started as King died. We wanted a change from the old band name. It’s a straight forward hardcore band name, like Negative Approach or Born Against, so we kept it.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Mark: I don’t know. I like it I guess.
Kattan: I always wanted to be in a band that consisted of fast and aggressive songs especially those influenced by the early Boston hardcore stuff. I can't see myself playing songs that are over a minute.
Stephen: Because it’s fun and easy, and the ladies think I’m cool when I tell them I’m in a band.
Dustin: I just want to write guitar riffs that make dudes punch each other in the dick.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Kattan: Yeah. I knew Dustin through my friends at shows and met Stephen through Dustin. In fact, I was playing bass for their first band called Hands That Mold before Relevant Anger came along. I met Mark through a friend of mine who used to play guitar for us.
Stephen: Yeah pretty much Kattan was in our old band, and I’ve known Dustin since high school.
Dustin: I met Kattan at local shows through mutual friends. I met Stephen through an ex-girlfriend. Mark just appeared one day and we told him to play bass or leave. So, he played bass and stayed.
Mark: I was selling girl scout cookies in rich neighborhoods and ran into these guys practicing, then shit got real.
4. Each band member’s favourite band?
Mark: My favorite band is Relevant Anger. Those guys suck so kool.
Kattan: Ooof that's a tough one. I have so many favorite bands! However, I will say that the Dead Kennedys are my favorite just because that was my introduction to punk/hardcore.
Stephen: I like a large variety of music ranging from blues to hip-hop to punk so it’s hard to really answer this question. As far as hardcore goes, which would be most relevant to my angry hardcore life, I would say SOA.
Dustin: Charles Bronson.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Kattan: What inspired me to write songs was seeing all the bullshit going on life and that even includes the hardcore and punk community.
Mark: Me not being able to find a girlfriend inspires me to write songs.
Stephen: The pain and hurt felt every morning as I first wake up and remember that I must experience another day of this miserable and lonely life.
Dustin: Like I said, I just want to write guitar riffs that make dudes punch each other in the dick.
6. Where was your last gig?
Kattan: Our last gig which was our third show took place last weekend at this awesome comic book store in Orange County called The Comic Book Hideout. That was so far our best sets of the three shows we’ve played.
Dustin: We played the Magic the Gathering room. None of us fainted while playing so, yeah, it was a good show. Mark: The comic book show was next to a police station. Kinda weird. Fuck it.
Stephen: Word.
7. Where would you like to act?
Stephen: We’ve recently played shows at comic book stores and a skate shop. So I’d really like to play a record store, it just feels appropriate. I really don’t give a fuck where we play, as long as were playing.
Kattan: Anywhere honestly. It would be great playing somewhere around the East Coast.
Dustin: Belgium, France, Norway, Japan, South Africa, Mexico.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Stephen: Lady Gaga. Sell out, or get out!
Mark: I’d like to feature with Bam Margera. Dustin: OSS, Ampere, Hounds of Hate, Failures, Boston Strangler, Hoax, Ceremony from 5 years ago.
Kattan: It wouldn't really matter to me honestly, but it would be awesome if we opened for Negative Approach.
9. Whom not?
Stephen: Anyone who needs to borrow my gear.
Mark: Tumblr kids, and tumblr bands like Rotting Out.
Kattan: Like I said, it doesn't matter. I'll even play a show with a band whose members I don't get along with. A show is a show and I just want to play and have fun.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Kattan: Stage fright? Well kinda during our second show. There was so many people and I started to choke a little, but that all went away once we started. I guess the best advice is to not face the crowd and just face your band (that is if you are a ''beginner''). Also, don't be afraid even if you screw up especially if you're in a hardcore band. It's punk, not Dancing With The Stars.
Dustin: Kattan shits himself just before every show. It’s hilarious, so that relieves the pressure off me.
Stephen: Nope.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Kattan: Well for this band specifically I can definitely say Sheer Terror, Life's Blood, and SFA lyrically. Musically are bands like Negative FX, Poison Idea, Infest, Etc.
Dustin: Off!, Keith Morris just keeps going and its fucking rad.
Stephen: SOA, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Void
Mark: Conflict, DYS, Turbonegro, Vitamin X, The Weaklings, Agnostic Front and a newer band called Have Heart.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Kattan: I have yet to encounter something like that. Hopefully I do tho! I love weird stuff.
Stephen: No one ever talks to me. :(
Mark: ‘’anyone have a cigarette, what about weed, or meth?’’
13. What do you think of your fans?
Kattan: So far our fans are our friends. However, someone from San Jose, CA bought one of our patches! Seriously shout out to that guy!
Dustin: Yeah! We just got our first mail order. Its weird to me that this band is being heard by humans that live very far away from my parents garage where we practice. Its very cool, but strange at the same time.
Stephen: They must be desperate for something new to listen to.
Mark: I think we need to get fans first before we judge them.
14. What do you think of our site?
Kattan: It's pretty rad. I love sites that includes new bands. Thank you for taking the time to interview us.
Dustin: Sick site, thanks for checking out the little bands.
Stephen: Gnar site Dude. Like, Wrrd Up G.
Mark: Cool, support local bands n stuff is always cool n stuff.
15. Something to add?
Kattan: Just a shout out to my friends Jordan who supports us, one of my great friends who was in our band for recording our EP.
Dustin: Yeah, shout out to
Jordan: ex-Guitar player for Relevant Anger. Check out his new band Noise Complaint FFO: Iron Maiden and the Toasters.
Stephen: You should totally check out this super cool power-violence band called Depakote. Their EP is called “Anarchy not Anarchism” It will make you smarter.
Mark: Fuck off duty cops. Fuck all kinds of cops. Fuck our government. Fuck the USA. Fuck the federal government. Fuck money. Fuck Bush. Fuck all my ex girlfriends. Fuck fast food. Fuck corporations the ungovernable force can’t be stopped.
