Via Versus - Interview
Hey, Breathing The Core fans, here we bring you another interview of the Post-Hardcore band Via Versus from USA, so here you can see and give a like to his FACEBOOK PAGE. We have nothing more to say, so enjoy this interview!
1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Early on when the band formed we didn't have a name and didn't really focus on one because we felt we couldn't put a name to something that didn't truly exist yet since we didn't have any completed songs. We spent along time writing and figuring out what we wanted to be. We scrapped a lot of music because we felt it would limit our creativity in the future and lump us in a general genre. So while we wrote and experimented with sounds our Vocalist Dingo joked he would do a solo project where he would call it Via Versus and his debut EP would be entitled "Free Flowers" and every song would be written with different variations and structures of the chords E, G, and C. When we had enough material completed to look into recording we needed to decide on a name and his solo EP had never come to fruition so we just went with the name because of the interpretation of all of us individually being influenced "Via" different things then you would think (Versus).
2.Why did you want to play this genre?
We don't really think we have a genre we just make music. We tell people we are a punk band, because we just like to get on stage and rock. At the heart of music we don't need any crazy over production or samples to play. We all played in previous bands ranging from Punk to Post Hardcore, Metal and Shoe Gaze and we throw in a little of all our musical backgrounds. Which to us makes more sense than trying to be one thing that doesn't really reflect every member.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Well I (Julian) met Jaime through an ad on Craigslist when my band wasn't moving forward and I wanted to start something new, and Jaime had been out of the scene for about 2 years raising his son. As it turns out we had a mutual friend who had played in both of our previous bands and had tried to get us together. Together we found Dingo through an online music forum and he came out and things just made sense. Ed's brother used to play with Jaime in a previous band and we auditioned a guitarist who joined us and brought out Ed to join us on bass but that guy left shortly thereafter moving Ed to guitar. Josh used to play bass in my (Julian) previous band so he came out to a house party and saw us play without a bassist and decided to join.
4. Each band member favourite band?
Dingo: For sure Lower Definition or Underoath Julian: Glassjaw or Converge
Ed: Probably Rancid or Bad Religion. Balance and Composure currently.
Jaime: I cant really just have one, I like lots of bands. I'm a drummer, any badass beat will win me over lol. But I would definitely go with Architects
Josh: Interpol
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Life quite honestly. Things are constantly on an up and dwn scale and writing music isn't only a way to tell a story of what's going on but a way to vent the things we go through daily
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was in lovely Austin, Texas 3 hours from where we live at a place called the Dirty Dog bar. We had a lot of fun there we want to do it again!
7. Where would you like to act?
Anywhere that will have us really. We love to play. We’re not picky or hellbent on a specific region or city.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Dingo: Glassjaw and Every Time I Die.
Julian: Johnny Craig cause people keep following him and buy up everything he's on and I think I still have a friend waiting on a laptop from him, but seriously I'd love to play with letlive or HRVRD
Jaime: I would love to play with Every Time I Die, Architects, Norma Jean, The Chariot, Fight the Fade, Oh Sleeper
Ed: The Dillinger Escape Plan, letlive., or Glassjaw Josh: I really like Night Verses
9. Whom not?
Dingo: Falling in Reverse
Julian: Guns and Roses and Attila
Ed: I probably wouldn't want to be featured with anything that doesn’t djent
Josh: I don't wanna play with nu metal bands cause the world has enough of them
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Josh: Well what I did was just focused on the positive things people had to say, and that if even one person feels that way, someone else somewhere will too.
Ed: Releasing your music is frightening in it’s own right, you’re put in a position that makes you quite vulnerable, if you’ve gotten past that you shouldn’t fear the stage and performing. If you’re scared things are going to go wrong, that’s life. That’s what makes it exciting!
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Dingo: In recent years Glassjaw and Lower Definition. But growing up Alice in Chains, Switchfoot and Underoath.
Julian: Glassjaw, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and the Ataris
Ed: Every Time I Die, Bad Religion, Rancid, and recently Converge.
Jaime: Underoath
Josh: Deftones and Chevelle of the early 2000's cause that's when I started getting into music
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Julian: This dude from Brazil hit us up and asked the band for a physical copy of the album but said he was like from Portugal but he was like an African prince too and if we sent him an album he would send us a check to deposit in our account for him and keep the remaining amount that he didn't need or something.
Ed: I was asked for an autograph on a denim vest after a show. I think the weirder part is I signed their bicep accidently out of miscommunication before signing the vest. I felt bad for the vest, that was a nice new denim vest and now it has my smudgy left-handed writing!
13. What do you think of your fans?
I think our current fanbase is friends, and we love our friends! Aside from that we’ve gotten numerous fans and we’re astonished with the response we’ve been getting. We’re really glad they like what they hear!
14. What do you think of our site?
Amazing really! I (Ed) came across it a couple months back and was ecstatic to see there was a site promoting local and national acts from all around the world. Especially unbiased and free. I don’t know of any site doing that, where they cater to what really matters and getting music out to anyone who wants it. It’s a beautiful thing honestly.
15. Something to add?
Thank you for showing interest in us and taking your time to read our thoughts. Again we’re astound and grateful you care.
