Matriarchs - Interview
Hey, Breathing The Core fans, here we bring you another interview of the Metallic Hardcore band Matriarchs from USA, so here you can see and give a like to his FACEBOOK PAGE. We have nothing more to say, so enjoy this interview!
1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
It was very premeditated. We wanted a name that wouldn’t fit the cliché hardcore or metal formula but still illustrate what we were trying to do with the music. We have always had a huge admiration for single mothers. I was raised by one. I happen to think single mothers are the toughest humans on earth, yet it’s the last thing people think of when one thinks of tough or harsh imagery. That’s what we love about it. In fact often times before hearing us or seeing us at a show, keyboard ninjas will snicker and troll us saying things like “do they even know what Matriarchs means… it means moms... These guys are a bunch of pussies!!” If they came to a show or listened the tracks…they would change their tune. We write very aggressive music and I think the name represents that in an extremely indirect way.
2.Why did you want to play this genre?
We’ve all been listening to hardcore and have been involved in the hardcore scene for the last decade. There is no music we’d prefer playing. This is our lifeblood. It has the power to unite unlikely groups of people from all walks of life, inspire and heal in a way you just don’t see in other genres of music. To us that is what art is all about.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Marty and I know each other from playing together in Ruckus. Miguel and Alfred were in my first few bands back when we were kids. We all came up together and have been on the road together in other bands. Richard is the N00b. He’s from Paris. He just came out here lookin to make waves that can be heard back home and I think we are doing just that.
4. Each band member favourite band?
There are too many to choose from. I would say as a whole we can all agree on E Town Concrete, Agnostic Front, Sepultura, Hatebreed and American Nightmare.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Everyday life. We have evolved a lot as humans but with each new technological evolution it seems we as a species lose a part of our organic unity and that causes a mess in the every day. It is just so much easier to be a piece of shit these days, we talk a lot about that. It’s easy to criticize a generation, but when you retrace the steps to the source, you find that it’s our society breeding the filth. The change has to come from within. Our lyrics always try to convey empathy and incite change.
6. Where was your last gig?
We played Fresno with some great bands from our side of the tracks and met some new friends. If you haven’t heard Infinite Waste, Strength in the Struggle or Set Your Anchor you should check them out, they are all great kids and work really hard. We are playing with our friends in Strike Back and Life Moves On later this week at Legend Records in San Diego.
7. Where would you like to act?
We want to go wherever people want to hear us.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
We’ve played locally with Lionheart a lot, they are super cool and fun dudes and I think a tour with them would be pretty awesome, we are also good friends with Merauder and hoods. That would be fun.
9. Whom not?
Kanye West.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
We’ve all been playing for a decade plus. The best advice is to face your fears and KEEP DOING IT EVEN WHEN YOU SUCK, YOU WILL ONLY STOP SUCKING IF YOU CONTINUE TO PRESS FORWARD INSPITE OF IT ALL. PRESERVERENCE IS KEY.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Hatebreed, Kickback, E Town Concrete, Only Living Witness, Pantera, Merauder, Sepultura, Earth Crisis.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Whenever we play in Orange County we have girls asking us if we have any candy left in our van. We don’t know why, but it happens every time around midnight.
13. What do you think of your fans?
This is hardcore! There’s no fans! There’s friends! And we have the best anyone could possibly ask for! We aren’t rock stars. We are all equals and we firmly believe that. We always chill and shoot the shit with anyone who takes the time to check us out. That said… there is nothing better than watching kids go off for us when we play. It’s why we do what we do.
14. What do you think of our site?
We think it’s great. We love that kids are still interested and involved. That’s what keeps a beautiful thing alive man.
15. Something to add?
Thanks so much for taking the time to check us out. We hope you like the record. It’s coming out in September, on Eulogy Recordings in the US and GSR music in Europe. Go pick it up! FRANCE!
