Bear Cave - Interview
Hey, Breathing The Core fans, here we bring you another interview of the Post-Hardcore band Bear Cave from USA, so here you can see and give a like to his FACEBOOK PAGE. We have nothing more to say, so enjoy this interview!
1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Matt S. - The name came about randomly one day when we were thinking of band names. We were in a transitional period with our band because we had gone through some member changes with our old group and then decided to go as a trio. We had been jamming on some mellow music and planned to do a side project of just that style of music. We talked about band names for it and Drew, our drummer, threw out the name “Bear Cave”. We thought it was hilarious and awesome at the same time. We decided to stick with that name as our actual band name
2.Why did you want to play this genre?
Matt D. - It didn't intend to, it just happened that way. We enjoy all styles of music and we like playing all styles of music. However, the genre that we perform is something that is just fun to us.
Drew - We all grew up listening to bands such as Every Time I Die, Norma Jean, Buried Alive, Death Threat, Madball, Converge, and Poison The Well. We all loved that style of playing, and collectively said why the hell not.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Matt S. - Matt D. and myself, Matt S., had been friends for a while because we knew each other through playing in local bands. I was singing for a band and Matt D. was playing bass for a band. Matt was starting a new project and knew I could sing but also knew I was a guitarist. We got together and jammed and decided we needed a drummer. We put out a Craig’s List add and Drew replied to it. He came out and jammed with us and after the second jam session, we decided that we had ourselves a drummer.
Drew - I did not know anyone. Took the risk of answering a craigslist ad and they weren't creepy and I'm still here. So it all worked out.
4. Each band member favourite band?
Matt D. – Pennywise is actually my favorite band. I’ve always listened to Punk Rock music growing up and instantly when I popped in their "Full Circle" album I was hooked.
Matt S. – Favorite band would have to be Lydia. They are an indie rock band from Arizona. I have always enjoyed the melodies of the songs and I like the vibe that the songs set. Each album has its own feel to it and I enjoy that with bands.
Drew - Never been able to pick a favorite. Just have a lot bands I listen to depending on the mood. Anywhere from The Police to Minus the Bear to The Bled.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Matt D. - The world inspires us. There is so many different things in the world going on from personal topics – political topics that we never really run out of things to say.
Matt S. - Inspiration comes from anything and everything. When it comes to lyrics, we tend to write about things going on at the moment, whether it be a feeling, a situation, a thought, a person, etc. There is always something to say and many ways to say it.
Matt D. - Instrument wise, majority of it Matt S. comes in with a good idea of guitar riffs
Matt S. - Once the writing starts, it’s mostly Drew yelling at me, telling me to play with a certain way, which to most people would sound like we hated each other, but it’s quite efficient for us hahaha! Once the basics are laid down, Matt D. then comes in and helps to restructure the song, if need be, and helps to organize the song. Each of us adds a nice element to the song writing process, and it works well for us.
Drew - Or a lot of yelling until he plays it the RIGHT way. It’s always a fun time when we try to write new songs. Haha.
6. Where was your last gig?
Matt S. - Our last show was a house show on May 2nd. It was in a basement that had to of been over 100 degrees. It was a sweaty mess and it was amazing! All the bands were a lot of fun and we had a blast. We haven’t done much lately because our work schedules have been crazy. We plan to get back on track soon and play shows.
7. Where would you like to act?
Matt D. - Anywhere. We’ll play houses, pizza shops, bars, and well, really just about anywhere. We will play just about anywhere.
Matt S. - It’s fun to play in different places and atmospheres. Sometimes the most odd environments can produce great shows
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Drew – Kurt Ballou of Converge.
Matt S. – I’d have to say Sam Cater of Architects or Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die. I enjoy their melody lines and phrasings and think they would be fun to record with.
Matt D. - I’d like to have Liam Cormier from Cancer Bats. He has such a unique and distinctive voice that would mesh well with us
9. Whom not?
Drew - Any one pretentious.
Matt S. - I’d have to say anyone who was crazy into doing drugs or someone who was too serious in the studio. I don’t know any specific people though.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Drew - No stage fright. There is a little bit of anxiety/nervousness to put on a good show and play really well. Outside of that it is fun. If it wasn't fun then I wouldn't be doing it.
Matt S. - I did theater growing up so I was used to being on stage in front of people. However, when it comes to making music, there is more of a vulnerability about it so when I first started playing music, I used to get nervous. Normally I am just pumped to get on stage and have a good time. To beat stage fright, the best way is to just block out the negativity and just have fun. Lose yourself in the moment and enjoy what you are doing.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Matt D. - ETID, Pennywise, No Use For A Name, and a ton of punk bands, indie bands, hardcore bands. There are so many good bands out there and different styles that it just happens to inspire us some way or another.
Drew - ETID, Norma Jean, Thrice, and The Bled.
Matt S. - Norma Jean, Thrice, Blink 182, AFI, Vanna, Further Seems Forever, Funeral For A Friend, Deaf Havana.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Matt S. - I had someone ask me to sign their face. It was odd because I had never signed anything for anyone unless I was paying a bill hahaha.
Drew - Nothing really. We don't have fans...just a lot of friends.
Matt D. - Nothing really. Sorry I couldn’t even make up something cool.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Matt S. - I try not to call them “fans”, more so I call them friends. Even if they are someone I just met. I feel like we appreciate anyone and everyone who gives us a chance. It’s always awesome when you can meet people who understand you or get what you are going for as a band. Also, it’s fun when you meet people who enjoy listening to your songs and who can have a good time at one of your shows.
14. What do you think of our site?
Matt D. - It’s a cool site. We didn’t even know anything about you guys before this. It’s awesome that you are trying to help bands out and sharing their music. We need more people that actually will share random bands more than just their best friend’s band.
Matt S. - I had never heard of this site before. Once I checked it out, I realized it was pretty cool! It has all kinds of bands on there and showed me new bands, so all around, it’s a winning situation!
15. Something to add?
Matt D. - Go out to shows!
Drew - Go out to shows! Too many venues are closing because people do not come out to shows anymore.
Matt S. - For up and coming bands, make music because you enjoy doing so, not because you want fame and money. Listen to all different types of music and play shows with all different kinds of bands. It will open your eyes and ears to new environments and new ways to write music.
