Nothing To Offer - Interview
Hey Breathing The Core fans! Here we bring you another interview. In this case to the Metalcore band Nothing To Offer, from USA. They are epic so nothing more to say than enjoy the interview and like their FACEBOOK PAGE! All the questions are answered by Patrikk.
1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
NTO was actually the name our FIRST vocalist came up with (we've gone through our share of band members). Since we always were Christians IN a band (and not a Christian band, per-say) it was supposed to be, we as people have nothing to offer God, who created the entire universe. He doesn't need us for anything. As told my August Burns Red, "He is God, we are just men, who are we to question.
2: Why did you decided to play this genre?
Patrikk: For me, this is the genre I love. It has the most energy, it isn't the same thing over and over, it shows the talents we have, and it reaches such an awesome type of people. Not to mention the music is KILLER! I've known I wanted to play music for about 7 years now, and 6 years ago, I picked up my first "attempt" at it and got into Rock Band, hahaha. A year later, i got my first drumset, and I knew this is what I wanted. My grandma told me when I was still in a highchair, I actually would "drum" along with her and mimic her taps she did on the table. C'mon, that's pretty cool.
Matthew: Metal and music in general has been a great passion of mine ever since I was very young, and ever since then I've wanted to share my passion with others. Screaming is a great outlet for all my anger and stress and is honestly very cathartic.
Matt: I've always enjoyed listening to the genre, but what I love about playing it is the raw energy, excitement and emotion that comes from it. I've always found metal to be an outlet and sometimes even a workout!
Lucas: I was really into a lot of heavy bands in the time including August Burns Red and a couple of other similar bands and I just really liked the technicality of the genre when it came to the guitar.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Patrikk: I knew OF Matthew before I met him, just through local bands and such, but I never knew any of the guys before the band. Lucas and Matt we met on Craigslist. Craigslist is amazing, and I'm sure they will all mention it too.
Matthew: I knew our former guitarist Justin from his last project that I was going to play bass for, but the project fell apart. Many of his ideas from that project actually carried over to Nothing To Offer so I felt pretty comfortable with the songs from the start.
Matt: We all met (in one way or another) on Craigslist searching for the same music and goals!
Lucas: No, met the people that started the band on Craigslist.
4. Each band member favorite band?
Patrikk: August Burns Red. Always have been ever since I heard Back Burner in a Rock Band video years ago haha. In close second, honestly, is Sleeping With Sirens, and then Memphis May Fire!
Matthew: I don't really have one, but Rush has been a key influence in many of my musical endeavors.
Matt: As Blood Runs Black
Lucas: Tool
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Patrikk: Knowing that I have helped people out of suicide. Knowing that people that self harm, or cut, or burn, or hate themselves, come to ME and ask ME what to do. Knowing that people ask me about what I believe and I show them, and they understand and feel a burden lifted. I've helped a few out of suicide, and countless more out of self harm. THAT is what this is about. Showing people that there is always a way out, and music is the BEST gateway out of it. I want to show not just 2,000 people, but the WORLD how powerful music can be. I want to help and be a light.
Matthew: My love for music as an art and a lifestyle.
Matt: Song inspiration can come from almost any band in the genre. I'll hear a cool riff from, let's call them, Band-A, and want to make something that sounds like that, a cool solo from Band-B and want something similar, and a breakdown from Band-C, etc. All bands within the genre are great influences for me.
Lucas: Trying to create something new and novel is what really inspires me to write. I always try to create something that is going to blow people's minds.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last show was actually a little place in Gainesville, Florida called the 8Bit Bar, but right before that? We actually played at Warped Tour in Saint Petersburg this year!!
7. Where would you like to act?
Patrikk: Warped Tour, again, but, as a main stage act. A "headliner" for any decent sized tour, as well.
Matthew: Anywhere that will have us.
Matt: I would love to play anywhere and everywhere where there are supportive fans. Touring has always been a dream and it would be amazing to establish a fan base across the United States and maybe even around the world! Something about going to a completely random city and showing up to a venue where everyone already digs your music seems like a great feeling.
Lucas: The biggest stage on a festival or stadium.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Patrikk: Ahhhh, August Burns Red, Memphis May Fire, Phinehas, and for their energy, The Ongoing Concept. Pretty much anyone, because to me, they have fans that might not have heard us, and that is an opportunity to show ourselves.
Matthew: Some of the greats in the genre. August Burns Red, After The Burial.
Matt: A couple of bands that come to mind that share similar styles to us would be August Burns Red, Phinheas, After the Burial, Miss May I, Memphis May Fire, As I Lay Dying, Texas In July, I Killed the Prom Queen, and pretty much anyone who would have us haha.
Lucas: Animals As Leaders.
9. Whom not?
We all unanimously agree on Blood On The Dance Floor. Are they still a thing? If so, why?
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright?
Patrikk: I remember when we played our first show in Jacksonville early 2014. I was super nervous, and when we played, I focused on ME and how I played, I didn't worry about even LOOKING at the crowd. I did what I do and felt awesome; come to find out I rushed some part in songs, but hey, it was my first show in any band, cut me some slack haha.
Matthew: I've been performing since I was 14 so I don't have stage fright, I love it on stage. A tip for getting over stage fright is to just jump on in, feel confident, and don't over-think what you're doing.
Matt: Stage fright is natural but I think the most important thing to know is that when you're playing a show everyone is there for the same thing; to play metal music. So naturally, everyone is rooting for you. Just play like you would normally play and the more you seem into your music, the more the crowd is. People feed off YOUR energy first.
Lucas: I had some when I first started playing shows. My tip is to not focus on the crowd too much, just focus on playing and enjoying yourself and everything will click.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Patrikk: August Burns Red. Their message, their talents, their passion, their drive for God, it makes me feel amazing. Watching Matt Greiner play always pumps me up and inspires how I write, too.
Matthew: Rush, The Devil Wears Prada, August Burns Red, Led Zeppelin... A Day To Remember was honestly the band that introduced me to the genre so I have to thank them for sure.
Matt: I have had so many influences in metal bands I've lost count. I got into metal originally from Metallica and Iron Maiden and my style preference has evolved so much over the years to where I am at now. But currently it is bands in the hardcore/deathcore/metalcore/progressive/etc genres.
Lucas: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool, August Burns Red, Killswitch Engage, and Dream Theater
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Patrikk: Oh my God, I kid you not, someone asked me if I would sell them a pair of my WORN, NON-WASHED BOXERS. That was so weird!! Hahaha!
Matthew: Nothing weird at all, just pictures and such.
Matt: I actually had a fan once try to buy my bass rig after a show. He said it was the best tone he's ever heard and he pulled out his checkbook. I was flattered, but no.
Lucas: No one asks me questions Emoticón frown
13. What do you think of your fans?
Patrikk: I love them. I love them so much. From people who come to shows and tell me how awesome we did and ask for pictures, to the people across the planet who download our music, free or not. Support is support, and to have real people like what we do, makes me so happy!
Matthew: Everyone has been so nice and people seem to really dig what we do which is all I could ask for.
Matt: I love all of our fans whether I know them or not. Anyone who comes out to a show or listens to our music or likes us on Facebook or follows us on Twitter or anything that shows support for Nothing To Offer is a win in my book.
Lucas: Love them!
14. What do you think of our site?
Patrikk: I've "liked" y'alls page since early last year and every now and then I find a band I dig. I love how much you promote "smaller" bands.
Matthew: I love music, and it's a gateway to music, so I have to say I like it.
Matt: From what I can tell it is a very good and fun website, and truly, thank you all so much for your interest in wanting to interview us and to give us space on your site; it means a lot.
Lucas: Awesome, anything music related is great!
15. Something to add?
Well, we actually just had our previous guitarist, Justin, step down because he didn't really want to commit to a band getting known, so we are currently in the process of replacing him. ALSO, we are doing a music video next month!! Be on the lookout for that, and from there, bigger things, and an EP!!
