Today, They Are Older - Interview

Today,They Are Older Online Promo Shot

In this new occasion we have the great opportunity to interview the Post-Hardcore band Today, They Are Older from UK, here we will let you their FACEBOOK PAGE to give them a like and follow them. We have nothing more to say, so enjoy this interview!

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

We had just got back together after being part of a previous band line up. Liam had read a poem that his dad wrote on his bathroom wall when he was a kid. Liam suggested the name and it seemed like a great title for a band that had not played together in the same room for almost a year.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

We all have a very different taste in music to be honest. For comedy’s sake, it is worth mentioning that Adam adores Taylor Swift and has plans on a proposal in the near future! While Jordan is a math/rock and post-rock fanatic. Between us, metal and it’s ever growing list of sub-genres where common ground for us so it made sense to play something we all enjoy.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Most of us knew each other from primary school or high school. When Tom moved to Darwen from Wales he was a babysitter for Jordan’s younger brother and sister. Matt got in touch with us to fill Dale’s shoes when he left and he has certainly made an impression since he joined!

4. Each band member favourite band?

Liam – Rinoa

Tom – Every Time I die

Adam – Taylor Swift

Matt – Childish Gambino

Jordan – And So I watch You From Afar

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

We are inspired by anything and everything. Our first e.p ‘Universal’ was inspired by natural disasters while ‘The Evergreen Theory’ was a little more self-centred and was based on our own experiences.  This record was again a little different and was written lyrically while Liam was filling in for the vocalist of Egos at The Door, on their European tour last year. It is a culmination of experiences Liam had on the tour. ‘Statues’ is based on a waiter that hit a child, who was begging for money, while in a restaurant in Macedonia. This was also the spark that led to the concept of our next record, but that’s for a future interview ;)

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was a Sunbird Records showcase and was a hometown show at a new venue named O’Garrs. It also featured ‘No Teef’, a math-rock act that contains both Jordan and Liam, as well as TTAO’s original drummer Dale Grogan. Nothing quite like a hometown show!

7. Where would you like to act?

Probably Sonisphere festival to be honest. We have had some amazing times at there, as drunken spectators. To play in front of a festival crowd like that would be something else. Failing that, more house parties!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

It would have to be Deftones.

9. Whom not?

Taylor Swift; she is not safe around Spud!

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

We love the stage! Liam used to get nervous and his solution was alcohol! In this case it made him much more charismatic, although it doesn’t always work as well for someone playing an instrument! I guess our advice would be to enjoy what you do. If you can’t believe in yourself, no one else will.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Musically it would probably be Misery Signals, Norma Jean or something like that. As a band, Egos at the Door are definitely up there. As a DIY band, they toured half the globe before they disbanded last year. It showed us that you don’t have to be a superstar to tour outside the country. You just need to want to do it.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

A refund! While playing in Heerlen (Holland) earlier this year, a guy came to us and bought our record for 10 Euros more than it was on sale for. It turns out he thought he was buying Recession Youth’s record. We used the extra money to buy him the album he wanted. He is now a fan of TTAO.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Our fans mean everything to us. It is really heart-warming to see people at your shows that have been there from the first gig you played. Without them I am not sure we would have carried on playing shows for so long.

14. What do you think of our site?

We all agree that it is a great site! There is some amazing talent out there and artists need more platforms like Breathing the Core, as it gives that talent a chance, as well as giving fans of hardcore and heavy music another place to find new acts.

15. Something to add?

We would like to thank you for having us. And thank anyone who has taken the time to check out what we had to say. We hope to see you when we hit the road again in November.
