Interviews: Up In Smoke
In this new occasion we had the great opportunity to interview the Deathcore band Up In Smoke from USA. We have nothing more to say than enjoy this interview and like their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
We had formed the band with our original 4 members before we had decided on a name, so we started writing down whatever random ideas we had for about a week and then chose the one we all liked the most. We all liked the movie so we decided to put the name on the list, and we felt like it fit us the best out of all of the other names and was the most memorable so we chose it. So I guess it just came out like that, it seems like it happened pretty naturally looking back on it haha.
2.Why did you want to play this genre?
We were all fans of the genre and had been playing different types of metal before we had formed together, so we already started out with a relatively heavy sound as soon as we started the band.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Yeah, we were all good friends before we had even thought about starting a band. Connor (vocalist) and Dillon (bass) had met in school and became friends over a shared interest in music. Dillon and our drummer Nate are step brothers, so the three of us would always hang out and smoke together. Connor and Micah (Guitar) had met while working together at a movie theater, so we would all normally hang out together at parties. We had all known that we played instruments, but had never really thought to start a band until Nate asked Connor if he knew any bands looking for a drummer. After realizing that we all wanted to start a band and we all played different instruments, it took off from there. We didn’t bring our other guitar player Michael into the band until about 8 months after it had stated when we were trying to get ready to begin playing shows, but he had already been in a band with Dillon when they were younger.
4. Each band member favourite band?
It’s a pretty tough choice to pick just one hahaha
Connor: Rings of Saturn
Micah: Between the Buried & Me
Michael: Veil of Maya
Dillon: Pink Floyd
Nate: Between the Buried & Me
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
A lot of the time our guitar players will make riffs and then Nate will figure out what he would like to play on top of that with the drums, but we also like to just jam and play whatever comes natural and try to use some of those ideas for songs. I like to try to write a story in our lyrics or revolve them around an idea I find interesting.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was with August Burns Red and Between the Buried & Me at Ace of Spades in Sacramento, CA.
7. Where would you like to act?
We would really like to play at a festival or somewhere outside of our country, but we still have a lot of awesome places we still haven’t played here in the US.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
We would like to play/record with a ton of different bands, but mostly the guys in Veil of Maya, Born of Osiris, Reflections, The Contortionist, Rings of Saturn, or Within the Ruins. Playing with Between the Buried & Me, Oceans Ate Alaska, Chelsea Grin, and August Burns Red was awesome as well and we would love to play with them again.
9. Whom not?
There aren’t any bands in our genre that we are against playing with, so mostly we just don’t want to play with any middle school scene girl bands like Blood on the Dance Floor hahaha.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
We have all had stage fright to some degree, its pretty normal for most people starting out. The best tips we could give is to just remember to just have fun and believe in yourself and your music. If you stress yourself out too much then you wont be able to preform as well as if you were relaxed and confident. If you enjoy the music you are playing and have fun doing it, everyone in the audience will feel that in your stage presence.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
We listen to a lot of bands of different genres, so we try to take influence from every aspect of our individual music tastes. We don’t want to sound like anyone else, so we try not to let one band influence us entirely too much.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
We haven’t had anything entirely too weird yet, but I guess the weirdest was when we had one guy try to let him into our band in exchange for a burned copy of a $10 DVD.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Our fans are awesome, their support is what keeps us going. We spend a ton of time and energy on the band but it is all worth it when we see people enjoying us doing what we love.
14. What do you think of our site?
We really like your website, you really help spread the word about metal bands and anything interesting going on in the metal community. We appreciate the interview!
