"I want people to come away from this album feeling more powerful than they did going in. To me it's a record about realizing your flaws, finding out they're not flaws at all, and then owning the SHIT out of them," reveals vocalist/drummer Karl Kuehn. "I think we sort of did that musically this time around too. In the past we've been criticized for our distorted """lo-fi""" production (a product of self recording in your dad's basement for years with no idea what you're ACTUALLY doing) so this time around rather than clean things up we made things MORE distorted lol, but also learned to scale it back when the songs required that."
The full album premiere follows the release of "Lacquer" which was noted as "a catchy smasher of a love song" by FADER, "Riff From My Head" which debuted via Brooklyn Vegan, and "Incubus Tattoo" which premiered via Stereogum.
On Popcorn Fish Guinea Pig Kuehn and his bandmates, guitarist Graham High and bassist Kory Urban, explore the overwhelming emotions (ranging from nostalgia to trauma, with a splash of self-realization) that come from a move back to one's hometown after years away, and re-exploring small town life as an adult.
"Sometimes you go through shit, some of it is unbelievable shit (good or bad), some of it is kinda fun. Sometimes you move back home and you realize why you're the neurotic, pop culture obsessed, queer fool you are," adds Kuehn. "And sometimes you find out that you really like that person...I know that in the downtime, and the loneliness that comes from living in a small town in your mid-twenties, I found out I sure did."
Museum Mouth is currently on their first ever full US tour, supporting Say Anything, mewithoutYou, and Teen Suicide. All upcoming tour dates can be found below.
"So far tour has been the funniest, wildest dream," shares Kuehn. "Everyone is so sweet, and getting to play shows every night with bands you've been a fan of for 10+ years will probably never stop being surreal. Just like premiering your dang record on a site you've subscribed to and loved for years is surreal. Bad things happen, it's inevitable, but you've gotta know how to take those things and turn them into something positive cuz you never know exactly how it'll all pan out...that's how PFGP got us here baby!!!"
Pre-orders are available now via museummouth.merchnow.com and each include an instant download of "Lacquer", "Incubus Tattoo" and "Riff From My Head". Vinyl for Popcorn Fish Guinea Pig is limited to 1000 including the following variants: red/white haze (limited to 200), black (limited to 300) and transparent pink (limited to 500).
