Interviews: Monument Of A Memory

In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Metalcore/Deathcore band Monument Of A Memory, from USA. Check out this band and give them a like on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

The band name Monument Of A Memory came from our guitar player Kevin Chapilliquen. During the band’s formation, we had been fighting over what to call ourselves for a few weeks. When Kevin came out of church one day he saw a statue with the words, “This monument is in the memory of…” and he was instantly inspired. We switched some of the words around and Monument Of A Memory was born.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

We have all been a fan of metal for most of our lives, and while we do like other forms of music as well, metal was the one we all most related with and really wanted to push ourselves towards. It’s challenging, technical, emotional, and has a lot of passion and feeling that goes into it, and that’s why we love playing that genre so much. Not to mention fans of metal are more die hard than most other genres of music.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Some of us knew each other from high school, and others we met along the way. We met our vocalist Tommy Gehringer at a few local shows. When we posted that our original vocalist had quit and we were holding auditions for a new one, he came over to try out. He turned out to be a perfect fit for the band and we’ve been friends ever since.

4. What is each band member’s favorite band?

Dylan: I love too many bands to be able to narrow it down to just one but favorites include Slipknot, Bring Me The Horizon, Lamb Of God, Avenged Sevenfold, Iron Maiden, and Architects.

Josh: Lamb Of God if I had to choose only one.

Tommy: Volumes has always been an all time favorite of mine.

Eren: I take a lot of influence from early thrash metal and modern Metalcore. So bands like Megadeth, Lamb Of God, and Trivium would be favorites of mine.

Kevin: Miss May I is definitely an all time favorite for me.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

We honestly just love to feel out songs. There is nothing specific that goes into writing every single song. We just love to play music, and any ideas that come to mind we throw out on the table and see what we can do with it. If we don’t like the end product when it’s all said and done, we scrap it. If we like the idea we run with it. Obviously our influences inspired us to want to play music, but when it comes to writing our own music, we don’t try to specifically sound like anyone else, even if we do have aspects that do sound like other bands, it’s never intentional.

6. Where was your last gig?

The Nyack Theater on June 5th 2016 with other great local bands such as Polarity, Buried Under Ruined Nations, Zoume, Ocean Of Illusions, and more.

7. What venue do you dream to play?

We would love to play the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ. We have all seen so many bands we love and admire play there, and playing on that stage where so many legendary artists have stood would be a dream come true.

8. Who would you like to play a show with?

We would love to play with many different bands but if we could only choose it would be either Parkway Drive or Lamb Of God.

9. Who wouldn’t you?

Any top 40’s radio artist like Nicki Minaj.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

We all get nervous to take the stage, even to this day. It’s definitely a lot easier now than it was when we were starting out, but that never goes away completely. Basically if you want to get rid of stage fright, the best that you can do is simply look at it like this. You already are going on stage, you have no choice once you get to the venue and you’re the next band that’s on. So at that point you might as well give it all that you’ve got, because it’s more embarrassing to look awkward on stage and not move, than it is to lose your mind on stage, get the crowd interested and have fun with what you’re doing.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

There have been many bands that have inspired us, but if we had to narrow it down to a few it would probably be Miss May I, Lamb Of God, and Parkway Drive as far as influencing Monument Of A Memory’s sound.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Fans sometimes ask our vocalist if they can put their finger in his earlobe (his ears are stretched). It's hilarious every time it happens and it happens pretty often. It's usually younger kids that are just getting into the scene. We don't understand why they'd want to do that. It's kind of weird right? I mean, don't get me wrong our vocalist plays with his ear lobes all the time but I never go and ask other people with stretched ears if I can put my finger trough their lobes. Still, it's incredibly funny to get asked that.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We love our fans. Anyone who is willing to support us by buying a CD, buying some merchandise, coming out to shows and screaming our lyrics back in our face is a friend of ours. We just love being able to play and write music, but without the fans we wouldn’t be able to have nearly as much fun with it as we do.

14. What do you think of our site?

So far it seems very professional and well put together and we are happy to be working with you guys!

15. Anything else to add?
