Interviews: Matriarchs
In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Hardcore band Matriarchs, from USA. Check out this band and give them a like on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
I have always been a fan of band names that don’t limit the artists involved by pigeonholing them in one particular genre or by telegraphing what they’re going to sound like just by hearing the name. I appreciate subtlety. At the same time I like to project strength, the Archetype of the Mother figure, the Matriarch has been a powerful one for 1000s of years, from the Sumerians, to the Israelites, Egyptians, Vikings, the Matriarch has always been revered as a symbol of understated strength and ferocity. Being raised in a broken home by a single mother helped make that admiration stronger in me so I named the band that.
2.Why did you want to play this genre?
I’ve been listening to hardcore and been going to shows for the last 16 years. Listening to my first hardcore records is what made me pick up a guitar.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Yes, other than Richard our singer who is a transplant from Paris, we have all been in bands together through out the years.
4. Each band member favorite band?
Ben – Hatebreed, Pantera, Only Living Witness, Life Of Agony, AFI
Marty – Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Story So Far, Trapped Under Ice
Richard – Terror, Bench Press, Nasty
Allan – Sick Of It All, Madball, Terror
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Our songs are inspired by our personal every day life struggles but we try to write our lyrics in a way that anyone can connect with the lyrics we use metaphors that can be interpreted however they need to be by the listener for it to be about them. At the end of the day we make music for the listener.
6. Where was your last gig?
White Oak Music In Van Nuys, CA.
7. Where would you like to act?
We want to play anywhere and everywhere that is down to bring the violence and have some fun.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
We always wanted to do something with Lion Heart, These Streets, or Lifeless and from the old school …Merauder, Obviously Hatebreed, Madball or Terror.
9. Whom not?
We were once offered a tour with Blood On The Dance Floor which we laughed at.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Keep playing till you don’t suck, then keep playing till you don’t have to think about it, then no matter how nervous you get it doesn’t matter because its all muscle memory.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Hatebreed, E Town Concrete, Merauder, Skitsystem, Dying Fetus, Born From Pain, Knuckledust.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
One time a girl fan asked to take us all on in the van. We are all married with kids so had to decline.
13. What do you think of your fans?
We don’t really think of people who check us out or listen to our music as an audience, more of a community that’s how hardcore has always been. We aren’t rock stars. We just do what we love to do. “Our Fans” are our local community of musicians artists and outsiders. We’re all a big family.
14. What do you think of our site?
