Interviews: Skylines

In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Metal/Djent/Hardcore band Skylines, from Canada. Check out this band and give them a like on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Mark and Matt had tossed out a couple of ideas to each other when they had decided that, while jamming was fun, they wanted to do something more with the music they were playing. Skylines was the last suggestion made and it just connected with us!

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

Growing up listening and going to metal/hardcore shows was a big part of our lives. The energy and fan interaction is unmatched by any other genre. Experiences like that with the bands we looked up to really inspired us. We settled on Progressive Metal specifically because of the dynamics the genre allows. The complete lack of restrictions in the genre allows us to experiment and really play with our creativity in any way we want to.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Lucas and Matt have known each other since they were very young, having attended the same elementary and high schools. Lucas met Mark through Mark’s old studio, Vincent City Studios. When Matt began to take an interest in music production, Lucas introduced Matt to Mark, eventually leading to their living together and jamming together. Steve is the only member to actually audition for the band and he was a hit from day one.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Steve: The Contortionist or Alice In Chains

Mark: Refused

Lucas: The Fall Of Troy

Matt: Kingdoms, Misery Signals, Volumes, Novelists, there’s just too many to choose from, I couldn’t possibly name one!

However, we all agree that people’s taste in music is always evolving and what we listen to changes often. Very tough to pick one specific favourite. At least it was for Matt.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Lyrically, Steve and Matt tend to draw from personal experiences or emotions brought on by the world around them. Musically, we all are inspired by artists from all genres. By those who try to break the mould and innovate their own style. Taking a bit from everyone and trying to create our own style. Then of course there is the feeling when you start a riff or melody or what have you and it feels so perfect that you become consumed by it. Like the only thing that’s left in the world is to continue to write until it’s perfect.

6. Where was your last gig?

Skylines has yet to play a show but we are very much looking forward to it!

7. Where would you like to act?

Ultimately, we’d love to play all over the world. Europe, the States, Australia, Japan, but to keep things local, we’ve all had pretty incredible experiences at The London Music Hall and Call The Office so being able to play on the stages we’ve seen so many of our favourite bands play would be an incredible experience!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

There are plenty of people we would love to feature with from guitarists to vocalists to productions. Mario Camarena of CHON, Mike Stringer of Iwrestledabearonce, and Joey Sturgis just to name a few. We feel that they would not only mesh with our styles to create a very cohesive idea, but they would also bring their own flavour to whatever it is we worked on to create a very unique sound.

9. Whom not?

Bono.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Steve actually has a great story about stage fright; “I played my first two years of live shows being so shy I closed my eyes the entire time. I only ever forced myself to overcome it by cutting my then-very long hair down to an almost buzz cut; Now i had to face people. There aren't really any tips; you have to be practiced to the point of absolute confidence. After that, its simple. Just feel it.”
11. What bands have inspired you the most?

There are so many bands that inspire us it would be impossible to name them all. There so many insanely talented and creative artists out there but to name a few, Structures, The Contortionist, Architects, Misery Signals, CHON, and Novelists.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We haven’t had anyone ask us for anything yet but we look forward to being able to answer this question with something hilarious some day!

13. What do you think of your fans?

We absolutely love the support. We’ve only officially released our six song EP “Oneirology” as of July 1st and so far we’ve received an unbelievable amount of support and love from so many people. So we would just like to say thank you to absolutely everyone who has liked, shared, and/or visited our page. It means the world to us!
