Interviews: Call Of Charon

In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Deathcore/Metalcore band Call Of Charon, from Germany. Check out this band and give them a like on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Back in the days our original bass player Jan was into Greek history / mythology and told us about a character called ‚Charon‘. He explained that Charon is the one that carries the dead souls to the afterworld. So we decided that it would be a cool idea to call „for him“ and then we quickly got the „Call of Charon“.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

When we started the band, the metalcore and deathcore hype was all around. And of course you get influenced by that. Our first output was very rough and we tried to combine fast, shredding metal guitars with heavy breakdowns and brutal raging vocals. It worked out fine so in the following years we tried to get better and form our sound like it is today.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Honestly Call of Charon had dozens of lineup changes. Meanwhile nearly 30 different musicians played in the band. And i’m pretty sure that even not every member who played in the band knows every one else who was a part of it. But right now we have three „original“ Band members that know each other for about ten years.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Arthur: Origin, Beneath The Massacre, Tool, Converge

Flo: Slipknot, Thy Art is Murder, Northlane

Patrick: Heaven Shall Burn, Killswitch Engage, Parkway Drive

Raphael: All Shall Perish, Parkway Drive

Robin: Glass Casket, Animosity

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Regarding the fact, that we had so much different musicians in the band, its hard to pick a certain point. I would say that the band was and is always driven by delivering heavy music, that is fun to play and fun to hear. There is nothing better than watching the people in front of the stage having a good time while you perform your own songs.

Regarding the lyrical work it’s pretty different - sometimes actual events become a song text and also personal issues or experiences.

6. Where was your last gig?

Last Thursday we shared the Stage with I Declare War and A Night In Texas in Cologne. It was cool to meet the guys and we had a really funny evening!

7. Where would you like to act?

Did you mean in what kind of venues? Over the years we nearly played every venue in our environment. We’d like to move out from our state and play more shows for people that haven’t heard about us before. And of course it would be great to play one or another festival show.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

On every record we put out, we had a featured musician. But in the past we always invited guests from befriended bands and made no „name dropping“. It’s very hard to pick a „famous“ one - for a vocal part i would say that Marcus from Heaven Shall Burn would fit pretty good to our music, haha.

9. Whom not?

I mean „never say never“ but we strictly don’t ever won’t to make use of clean singing goal parts, so right now i would say that you won’t ever will hear a feature that delivers a clean voice!

It’s not about that we do not like clean parts but honestly there are not many bands that handle that good…

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

This is very different. As an example i (Patrick) am not really nervous - usually i’m more stressed. I think about everything we need for the show - if the intro will work, if i can get quickly enough back to the merch table after the show, etc. Arthur and Rapha are also not nervous but they focus - a lot! Shortly before we start they switch to the „concert mode“ and are very concentrate. Robin is very relaxed before we keep on blasting and only Flo is kinda nervous and twitchy.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Thats hard to say! I think back when we started the band everyone listened to The Black Dahlia Murder, All Shall Perish and As Blood Runs Black. Nowadays we still are into those bands but actual groups like Thy Art Is Murder or Parkway Drive are pretty impressive and definitely have their influence in our material.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

For us it's always kinda 'out of this world' when someone asks if we could sign a cd or a poster. This is absolutely crazy, we are not a famous band and normal guys - so to give someone an autograph is pretty wired but i like it that those simple moves make other people happy!

13. What do you think of your fans?

It is always amazing to recognize people that show up a second time. We don’t take that for granted, so every one that likes our music, our live performance and checked us out for a second (or more time) is an awesome human being. When you see the pople move to songs or sometimes sing some lines - those are moments that were very special, and those people made it that special,

14. What do you think of our site?

It’s really great that you give underground bands a platform and show interest in the „not so well know bands“. Keep up the good work and hopefully this won’t be the last time that we will have a talk!
