Interviews: The Deadnotes
In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Pop Punk band The Deadnotes, from Germany. Check out this band and give them a like on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Not a long story. Our bass player came along with that and our 14 year old selves were like: “Wow, that sounds really cool!” I don’t know if it ever did, we’re doing alright with it anyway.
2.Why did you want to play this genre?
We actually never talked about stuff like genre before. We always do what just feels right for us. Our heroes when we were younger played English Punkrock, Indie. So that’s what we did. Anyway, the older we got, the slower our music. (sounds even weird to me writing this as a 20 year old dude, haha). However I can’t see us getting tired of pushing ourselves and our music to the limits.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Yep. We’ve all been knowing each other for ages. Jakob and Yannic already spent their time in the kindergarten together, we all visited the same elementary school. Darius and Yannic formed their first band project when they were 9 years old. The band consisted of drums and electric guitar and wrote one 20 sec song based on C and C# power chords, no vocals. After one rehearsal the band broke up.
4. Each band member favourite band?
That’s super hard to say, so many great bands. Probably at the moment:
Darius: Don Broco, Heisskalt.
Yannic: Pinegrove, Tigers Jaw, Brand New, Title Fight, mewithoutYou.
Jakob: The Smith Street Band, The Front Bottoms, Prawn, Such Gold, Red City Radio, Apologies, I Have None.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
I’ve always used music as a functional instrument. Daily life has so many great, positive but also tiring, sad and frustrating stories to tell. I simply love using this band to express my fears, anger or frustration and then feel better in the end. I’ve always rather been shy and hiding, anyway music provides the opportunity for me to overcome that person at some points and just clear my mind from all the bullshit that drags me down.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last show was in Penzance, Cornwall, UK two weeks ago. We’ve been on tour for one month, Penzance was the very last show. The small bar was super packed, average age 50+. We had a fantastic time. Honestly. Haha. We had to ride home overnight for 18 hours just right after the concert, we made it two miles away from the venue until we realized that we almost ran our rented Diesel van out of gas. The only gas station close didn’t accept our credit cards. Super lol.
7. Where would you like to act?
I’d really love to do more open-air shows. Any crazy and unusual spot is fine. We got asked to play open air in a snow park once. I was going crazy about it but in the end it didn’t work out.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Would love to do features with any cool band on that planet.
9. Whom not?
Some gangsta rap dude from our hometown asked us to do a collaboration once. Fast cars, sexy girlz. We didn’t do that.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Nope not really. Still after 300+ shows I (Darius) always get super nervous before playing. Anyway that’s just the feeling that keeps me alive and helps not to turn into routine.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
At the moment it’s definitely bands such as Beach Slang, The Smith Street Band, Muncie Girls or The Front Bottoms but also bands like Arctic Monkeys or Itchy Poopzkid from Germany. Also important to mention is that the last years we played together with such a great amount of incredible (local) bands. It’s super inspiring to come face to face with so many different musicians all over Europe.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
One girl in Russia once asked if she could borrow our drummer’s rack tom. Then she sat down on the floor all alone in an empty 1000 people capacity venue and played the rack tom like a bongo for 20 minutes.
13. What do you think of your fans?
I do myself hard with the word “fans”. But yeah. Our “fans” are the best.
14. What do you think of our site?
I pretty much appreciate devil horns instead of a cursor on your website. I appreciate that your open minded and providing a platform also to non core-related bands. I enjoyed the interview. You’re doing it right.
15. Something to add?
Stay cool. Be nice to each other. Hail saitan !
