Interviews: ACCURSED SPAWN

In this new occasion we have had the opportunity to interview the Death Metal band ACCURSED SPAWN from Canada. Check out this band and give them a like on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Jay: We all were sitting around a room sometime in 2010, shooting around ideas and checking what was already taken using metal archives. We hit a theme around some form of evil incarnate, and eventually landed on Accursed Spawn.

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

Weiyun: A combination of the aggressive energy and the technical challenge of playing so many notes so fast.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Weiyun: Jay is the only original member of the band; at that time, he already knew Adam who was in Aggressor and eventually switched over to Accursed Spawn. In those days, Weiyun was playing in another Ottawa band, Argus Panoptes, and had shared the stage with Accursed Spawn. Max is the newest member, but we already knew him too from his other band Maou Mindu (which Weiyun was also a founding member of!) I guess you could say our scene is one big happy family, and everybody knows everybody!

4. Each band member favourite band?

Weiyun: Obscura, X Japan
Jay: Hard to say (so many) but probably Tool
Max: Rivers of Nihil takes it for me right now
Adam: Ever? Iron Maiden. Favourite death metal band is Deeds of Flesh.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Jay: Musically, we draw inspiration from all over the place. When you listen to the music you hear obvious elements of Cannibal, Suffocation and whatnot mixed with thrash and whatever else we’ve been jamming too lately.

Lyrically Accursed Spawn has always been about evil incarnate. Earlier albums focused more on the putrid acts of an individual, whereas the new album which we’ll be releasing via PRC Music in 2019 focused more on humanity as a force of violence: to ourselves, to each other and to the places we inhabit.

6. Where was your last gig?

Weiyun: In our hometown of Ottawa at Maverick's with Insurrection and Beyond Creation.

Jay: Craaazy good gig. Apparently someone lost a tooth in the mosh pit when we played Bhopal.

7. Where would you like to play?

Weiyun: The NAC! Manchester Arena! Madison Square Garden! Tokyo Dome! Dream big!

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Jay: We’ve been really lucky to play with some major influences already (i.e. Beyond Creation a few days ago) so just more of that. Touring with someone like Cannibal or Dying Fetus would be amazing. If you’re reading this, John Gallagher, we’re down. Just give us a ring.

9. Whom not?

Jay: I mean, we could do a Canadian tour with Justin Bieber and just be like “Hey! Two different types of tunes for a toonie, eh?” but realistically that would probably suck, so probably not him.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Weiyun: We've never had stage fright because we simply love what we do from day one. For new bands, we suggest you really practice your material until it's so internalized that you can't mess up, and let that confidence carry your performance!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Weiyun:  Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Death, Obscura, Beyond Creation

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Weiyun:  "Can I rub your abs?"
Jay: Dude, can I run your abs?

13. What do you think of your fans?

Weiyun: Our fans are awesome and we wouldn't be here without them! Live shows are an exchange of energy - we rock out, they mosh, and we amplify each other!

14. What do you think of our site?

Jay: I dig it! Nice, a clean, easy menu up top. Looking now and see that you just covered the new Ominous Eclipse single, which is cool – they’re local to Ottawa as well and good buds of the band.

15. Something to add?

Jay: Thanks for having us on Breathing the Core! Keep it brutal, and for anyone reading this that hasn’t checked out the new Bhopal single, well, go do that.
