Interviews: Never Us

In this new occassion we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock band Never Us  from USA. Check out the interview and this band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Steven Parent: We had a long brainstorming session for a few days throwing out every name we could think of in a group text, and we eventually narrowed it down to our favorites. We then sent a list of 5 or so to Matt Good to ask what he thought. One of the names on that list was NVUS, and he thought it sounded like Never Us which he liked and we also thought was cool.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Kegan DeBacker: I would say that our genre is a mix of all of our influences making it somewhat unique. I don’t think that there was a thought to play a specific genre, the music just comes together when we write what we feel.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Jordan Cuadras: I knew Kegan before the band was formed. We met in Jr high back in 2006.

Chad: Honestly, I did not know any of the other guys prior to being in this band. I had a mutual friend of our old drummer who said they were looking for a bass player, so I messaged him and got an audition which I killed apparently haha. But I’m glad to be in this band with an amazing group of guys.

Kegan DeBacker: I knew Jordan from when we were younger and everyone else kinda came together as the band developed. Steven actually lives in Prescott and drives down to practice and play. We actually went to highschool with Jesse, however he was a year or two ahead of us and Chad auditioned early on in the band. we all just kinda came together through responses on facebook i believe haha.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Chad: Favorite band of all time would have to be AC/DC. I was obsessed with them for years when I was younger and learned my roots from them.

Kegan DeBacker: My favorite band would probably be Funeral For a Friend or Dance Gavin Dance. I listened to both of those bands practically everyday when I was younger and they inspired me a lot to write music.\

Steven: Its very hard for me to pick just one band as so many bands have influenced me and continue to each day. Right now I want to say Porcupine Tree just due to the overall scope of their influence on my playing and perception of music.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Kegan DeBacker: I am inspired to write by a lot of different things. I actually listen to a lot of rap and electronic music now so that is a big influence on what I write. I have always liked mixing a variety of sounds into songs so keeping up to date with new music keeps me motivated.

6. Where was your last gig?

Kegan DeBacker: I believe our last gig was at Joe’s Grotto in Phoenix. It was the last time that we jammed all our old songs before writing this new batch of work. We are now practicing a new live set and are excited to show this new sound.

7. Where would you like to act?

Chad: Locally I would love to play the Van Buren. It looks amazing and so many bigger bands have played that venue so far even though it’s still kind of new. I would also love to play at the House of Blues.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Kegan DeBacker: I don’t know of the guys would be down but I have always wanted a rap feature haha. I would be cool to feature nothing, nowhere on a verse or a bridge and would definitely ask if I got the chance.

9. Whom not?

Kegan DeBacker: I don’t think I have a specific person that I wouldn’t want to work with off the top of my head. I typically like to write with anyone, except if they have an attitude or just aren’t motivated to write something unique.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright?

Jordan Cuadras: I wouldn’t say none of us has really suffered from stage fright. However I am the only one in the band that gets high anxiety before a show but the moment we start playing it all goes away.

Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Jordan Cuadras: my only tip would be to definitely practice a lot. I find myself getting anxious prior to a show sometimes cause I feel I will mess up. Just practice and do the best you can live that’s all you can really do.

Chad: After being in bands and school band and playing hundreds of performances, I don’t really ever get stage fright. I feel like it’s just kind of something you get used to with more performances that you do.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Kegan DeBacker: Definitely the vast number of emo bands I listened to in the 2000s. Currently I am inspired by Nothing, Nowhere, Goldroom, and a lot of rap.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Steven: Honestly I personally haven't had any odd requests in this band, just the standard things like signing merch or taking pictures. When I toured in another established band there were sometimes people who acted very weird around me and there was one girl one night that followed me around all night around the venue talking about her boyfriend's band like I could get them on a tour with us or something haha. Thats about the extent of it and thats not even that weird. I've heard stories from other people that are pretty weird but honestly things have been pretty reasonable for this band(so far haha).

13. What do you think of your fans?

Kegan DeBacker: Our fans are pretty awesome honestly. They are willing to see us perform no matter where we play. We had a show up in Flagstaff one time and one of our closest fans Jay, was like “dudes I’ll be there.” And sure enough we roll up to a bar in Flagstaff before our show and Jay just rolls up like 10 minutes later haha. I also love that all our fans are down to get a little crazy at shows cause we tend to let loose when we play.

14. What do you think of our site?

Steven: I checked it out and it looks nice and sleek. It also has a lot of bands featured and a whole lot of content as well. Thanks for featuring us on it!

15. Something to add?

Kegan DeBacker: Thanks for the interview! Our new song, Retrograde is out now on Youtube, Spotify, and itunes! You can follow the band and stay up to date on Facebook and Instagram @neverusofficial
