Interviews About Albums: Son Of The Mourning - Eulogy (2019)
1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?
Its been a genuine labour of love. When the band turned its amps off for the last time around 2008ish and the members scattered in the wind, there was a definite sense of unfinished business. We were really proud of the material we had been working on and it was a massive shame it never got the release it deserved. When Gav came calling, talking about putting that chapter to bed properly once and for all I jumped at the chance. We had a chat about what tracks to work on and which ones were to be left for another time and we went from there.
2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?
I think it was Gav that came up with Eulogy. The word seemed quite fitting considering the release is intended to bring the curtain down on that particular era of SOTM. We believe in the material, we created it together and now we’re finally giving it the ‘send off’ it deserves.
3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?
We have always worked as a band with some contributing lots, others less. A song could come from a riff Gaz or Gav brings to the table or even just messes around with while warming up. I would then listen to the emerging riff(s) and mentally play around with beats/tempo/arrangements and then we’d collectively take it from there. Lyrics were originally split between previous vocalist Jacko and myself however for Eulogy I pretty much completely rewrote everything bar a few lines here and there in Laura. We would’ve loved to have kept all the original lyrics from all SOTM contributors however the loss of hard drives over time deprived us of them.
4. If you have to pick one song, which one would you pick?
That changes every time I listen to it. Im really proud of Eulogy as a body of work but current personal favourites are Glowing Orionid and the immense Death in the Picturesque. I think Picturesque shades it if Im picking one only.
5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD?
If there is what it is? No real underlying message at all to be honest, its just a collection of what we consider to be quality tunes within our genre that we put our heart and soul into writing, rehearsing and playing live that we’ve finally managed to get out there.
6. Are there some lyrics that you´d love to share?
All lyrics will be in the physical cd package through Engineer Records so rather than single out one particular line or song, anyone listening and following the lyrics can absorb what’s being said and formulate their own ideas from their own mind. I find it interesting how the same thing or topic can bring so many different interpretations from so many different people. That’s what makes an artist’s product/material/creation so special.
7. Which inspirations haven been important for this album ? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thanks specially?
Personally speaking I’d like to thank Gav for the blood, sweat and tears he’s spilt over this body of work in Rain City Recording Studios. Without him this wouldn’t have seen the light of day and would still only exist as a rough personal collection of demo MP3s within the band members themselves. I hope the rest of the guys who were involved in the original sessions back in the day enjoy it, we had a great time together. That goes for virtually every previous member of SOTM I’ve played with in every incarnation from its
inception in 2001.
Inspiration comes in many forms. Mine comes from loss, tragedy, heartbreak and the healing process of these things combined with a dogged refusal to stay down. A kind of phoenix from the flames outlook. Gav’s will possibly be completely different. Music wise, I’m an 80s/90s thrasher and Gav and the rest of the guys were a younger, more modern crew so we kinda met somewhere in the middle. If we liked something, we incorporated it into our music. If we didn’t, we didn’t !
8. Something to add?
The response we’ve already had to Eulogy has been fantastic and its really instilled a ‘what’s next’ fire into Gav and I so we’re now looking ahead and planning some further writing and recording sessions. We have a few bits and
pieces that we will work on, maybe breathe new life in some older more obscure material and more importantly, see what any new material between us two sounds like. We’re both very excited to see what the next steps bring, for both Eulogy and the Son of the Mourning name. Watch this space ….
