Interviews: Deference

In this new occassion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Metalcore/Melodic Metalcore band Deference from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their  FACEBOOK PAGE. 

1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that? 

We were originally named Alita but a previous member came up with that and everyone kept saying we were ripping off Atilla, which we don't sound like at all! Our old guitarist and current videographer Dave Sands came up with the name and it stuck!

2.Why did you want to play this genre? 

All of our favourite bands play this style of heavy music so it makes sense for us to play in the same genre!

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed? 

A few of us were in a band together before we started Deference and most of us had met each other at shows before!

4. Each band member favourite band? 

Rob - Currents

Matt - Periphery

Mike -  Architects

Jonny - Metallica

Shaun - Northlane

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs? 

Matt (Guitarist): Musically I am inspired by my favourite bands like Architects and lyrically Rob (Vocalist) and myself cover a wide range of topics that affect our lives such as mental health, the future of our planet and societal issues.

6. Where was your last gig? 

We played the Joiners in our hometown of Southampton just before Christmas last year.

7. Where would you like to play? 

I personally (Matt) would love to play Nottingham  Rock City main stage cause I grew up watching so many bands there that it'd have special meaning to me!

8. Who would you like to support? 

(Matt): Obvious answers are Metallica, Iron Maiden cause they have the biggest crowds but I think probably the bands that have inspired our sound the most like architects or Northlane.

9. Who not? 

I mean as long as they're not racist or spouting that kind of rhetoric I think we're cool.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that? 

We've all been doing this a long time, you just have to get up there and ignite that feeling, use it to give you confidence.

11. What bands have inspired you the most? 

Architects because of their songwriting, musicianship and their amazing personality and the way they have handled everything that has happened to them and come out the other side. Also more locally, Our Hollow Our Home are an inspiration for us in terms of sheer will power and persistence and how to succeed on your own!

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for? 

Somebody asked for a cut of Robs hair once.

13. What do you think of your fans? 

We love them, they're the best!

14. What do you think of our site? 

The site looks cool, we think it could look better on mobiles though!
