Interviews: Beachmaster
In this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock band Beachmaster from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
CJ (vocals/guitar): A David Attenborough documentary about the elephant seal.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
CJ: We sort of just came to it really, the band started out very folky and acoustic-driven with harmonica, and eventually we just spiraled down a more overdriven route.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
CJ: Not really, I knew who Martyn was from when he was in my old bands’ rival act. He was the cool metalhead in an indie band and was the only one who could play his instrument. Not a lot's changed for him.
4. Each band member favorite band?
CJ: Aaagh tough question, I've never really got sick of Hot Water Music but I'm not sure they're my fave. Martyn never stops whistling We Like To Party by the Vengaboys. He’d probably answer Iron Maiden though. Robson is really into Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and Bjork.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
CJ: Kurt Vonnegut books, I could read them all day. Mostly just seeing all the human tragedy that is daily life in a backwater town full of social donuts.
6. Where was your last gig?
CJ: That would be Kendal Calling I think.
7. Where would you like to play?
CJ: I’d love to play the Americas. I'd like to play more often.
Rob (drums): Specifically, my dream venues are The Metro in Chicago, and the Royal Albert Hall - it’s very pretty.
8. Who would you like to support?
CJ: I can think of many bands who I'd love to support and 14 year old me dreamed I might.
Rob: Los Campesinos! and The Frames are what springs to mind for me currently.
9. Who not?
CJ: The Killers unless they promised not to play Smile Like You Mean It. Maybe it doesn't matter really because we could just leave before they played.
Rob: I’d second The Killers - but they’d also have to promise not to play Mr. Brightside.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
CJ: Just don't take yourself too seriously, be silly, have fun and laugh a lot. I'd give that advice to anyone.
Rob: Make sure you know your parts before you go onstage - learned that one the hard way.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
CJ: Colossal, because their music is amazing and intricate, seriously go listen to them.
Rob: Overall, Smashing Pumpkins & Nine Inch Nails. More recently, At the Drive-In.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
CJ: To stroke my head... Now she's my insufferable girlfriend and I can't get rid of her.
13. What do you think of your fans?
CJ: A lot of our fans are friends which is nice, there's a really close music scene around here so we mix with lots of other musicians and we're all friends and fans of each others bands, mostly.
Rob: Our biggest fan is probably my mother. She's ok.
14. What do you think of our site?
Rob: Any site giving visibility to new bands deserves major props & appreciation.
15. Something to add?
CJ: Salt and pepper to taste...
Rob: We’re putting out a new single on Friday 23rd August called Only If You Know. We really like it and the music video is good fun too, give it a watch/listen. We also have a 6-date UK tour coming up at the start of October - Penrith, Newcastle (well, Gateshead really), Carlisle, Manchester, Ayr & Glasgow. If you’re reading this you’re now morally obligated to come. Cheers to Breathing The Core for having us x
