Interviews: Extinction

In this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Thrash Metal/Death Metal band Extinction from Italy. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?  

Danilo Bonuso (guitars): I really liked the title of the Megadeth album "Countdown To Extinction" and from there I took the name. It was perfect, because it tied a lot with the themes of our texts, with a world adrift, close to extinction.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?   

Danilo: My musical tastes are related to heavy metal and hard rock of the eighties, and they were the first things I played, but in the early nineties I was struck by bands like Sepultura and Pantera that had taken extreme metal to a new level. From there came the desire and inspiration to play our thrash death metal.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed? 

Danilo: I only knew Filippo, who did not respond to my request to join the band in 2014, the year I reformed it after 17 years. I met Alberto at a party, who was looking for a band to play in, while the singer Alice and all the others I found through announcements.

Filippo “Howling SStar” Collaro (voice): I knew the leader Danilo because we played once together on stage and he asked me to join Extinction before Alice Darkpeace, but I had to refuse because I was too busy with Silenti Luna. 

Marco “Hellfire” Campanati (guitars):  I've known Alberto during university because we both went to the Campus “Einaudi” in Turin and i knew by sight Danilo and Filippo years ago at the club in Turin “Inferno Cafè” while Danilo was playing guitar with another band; Malefica. Lorenzo was presented to me by Filippo a few months later Marco, the previous bass player who left the band.

Lorenzo Catolla (bass): Filippo, the new singer, is a friend of mine and we played together in another project started 10 years ago.

4. Each member favourite band?

Danilo: Too many to mention.

Filippo: I have more than one favourite band for each period of my life. I approached to heavy metal music with Manowar but I started to write and scream my first songs when I approached to black metal with Cradle of Filth: my name was born by "Beneath the Howling Stars" and Death SS, my favourite italian band of all time. I like very much also Dark Tranquillity and Death Stars because they teached me that I can use my voice in many different ways. All the bands I've mentioned are important at the same way. 

Marco: Immortal, Slayer and In Flames.

Alberto Scrivano (drums): Iron Maiden, Pantera, Metallica, Misfits, Volbeat, Cannibal Corpse.

Lorenzo: I have many favourite bands, especially Sepultura  Slayer, Pantera, Slipknot, Lamb of God, Metallica which are for me the greatest band of all time.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs? 

Alberto: About the lyrics, I’m inspired by historical events and creepy facts.

Danilo: With regard to the lyrics, I am inspired by the actions of the hidden powers, like the Illuminati, who the plot in the dark without our knowledge and decide the fate of the world.

6. Where was your last gig?

Lorenzo: Our last gig, which also was for me the baptism of fire, was with Extinction at Padiglione 14, a music pub in Collegno near Turin.    

7. Where would you like to act? 

Lorenzo: Everywhere!

Danilo: The same, especially at festivals and in other states.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?  

Lorenzo: With Slayer!

Danilo: With any band that has influenced my musical growth.

9. Whom not?

Danilo: I don´t know...we would like to play with anyone

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Danilo: I always suffer from it...the best thing to fight it is to breathe deeply. After the first track the fear should disappear.

Lorenzo: No fear at all, full speed ahead! There are no tips, nothing else.....

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Danilo: I have played in different bands but for the style of Extinction the bands that inspired me for the composition are Morbid Angel, Sepultura, Pantera, Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica.

Lorenzo: My inspiring bands are: all those that use distortion!!!

12. What´s the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for? 

Filippo: Sometimes people ask me if my beard braid is fake. 

13. What do you think of your fans?

Danilo: Every person who appreciates our music is achieving a goal...and so far this is going pretty well.

Lorenzo: I've been playing in Extinctions for a short time to get to know them all, but their fans are fantastic!

Filippo: I don't already know them as well. I joined recently the Band.   

14. What do you think of our site?

Filippo: Your site is above all an excellent visibility showcase for emerging, debut and underground musicians and is well organized in categories of music subgenre, events, etc.

15. Something to add?    

Danilo: On October 18, two years after our debut album "The Monarch Slaves", will be released our new the album "The Apocalypse Mark", recorded at Davide Billia's Mk2 Studio (Antropofagus, Beheaded...), produced and distributed worldwide by Revalve Records. The first lyric video will be released soon, and the album will surely surpass the success of the previous album. We have done a great job and I hope all lovers of thrash and death metal will like it!
