Interviews: Tie Your Anchor
In this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Emocore/Metalcore band Tie Your Anchor from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Jonah (Vocals): I actually created TYA in 2012. It took about a year to find members.
I came up with the name based on The Color Morale who used an anchor for a lot of their imagery/albums as well as a line from a The Bunny The Bear song.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Jonah (Vocals): 2012 was a huge era for hardcore music. That style of music was really for the kids who were different. Seeing bands perform inspired me to get on stage to do the same thing. I wanted to give back to the music that gave so much to me.
Brandon (drums): I grew up listening to this music. So it only seemed natural to start incorporating it into drums.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Chris (Clean Vocals, Guitar), Josh (Bass), & Brandon (Drums) knew each other from high school.
4. Each band member favorite band?
Jonah (Vocals): Silverstein
Chris (Vocals, Guitar): AFI (of course)
Josh (Bass): Bullet For My Valentine, or TREX
Brandon (drums): I like a lot of different genres of music, so it’s hard to pinpoint a specific band. But if I had to choose, it would be Real Friends.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Jonah (Vocals): I've always loved writing, so this is my outlet. Usually based on past trauma/events. I try to be as real as possible so that anyone listening can possibly relate and understand.
Josh (Bass): Exes, Batman, and Boredom
Chris (Vocals, Guitar): Just making music in general. I usually pick up an instrument and start writing what ever sounds good. I either keep writing, throw it away, or save it for later.
Brandon: Honestly, probably just being in a band, in general, inspires me.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was at Evolution Music in Downers Grove with Not My Weekend & Happy.
7. Where would you like to act?
Jonah (Vocals): Definitely House of Blues.
Josh (Bass): House of Blues would be a dream.
Chris (Vocals, Guitar): Any place really, we all love performing and being on stage.
Brandon (drums): Probably the subterranean. It’s small, but that place draws in huge crowds.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Jonah (Vocals): Silverstein, The Bunny The Bear, Emmure, Hawthorne Heights
Josh (Bass): Some local bands id love to play with would be Cherryhead and Deathrun. Some bigger acts would be BFMV or Mastodon.
Chris (Vocals, Guitar): AFI
Brandon (Drums): Probably Beartooth. I feel like the music would mix well for a show.
9. Whom not?
Jonah (Vocals): Anything WAY far from our genre zone... Like country.
Josh (Bass): I'll play with anyone who is willing to share their music with the world
Brandon (Drums): Falling in reverse sounds like a bad show. Would still do for the publicity though.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Jonah (vocals): I'm constantly in a panic until the second I step on stage and begin my vocals. I have a routine I do before every show that helps me relax and warm up. I usually spend time away from everyone and mentally prepare. I do also keep my eyes closed for a good portion of the performance.
Josh (Bass): I have terrible stage fright. What I do is I take off my glasses. Then I can't make eye contact or see anyone's faces. It helps a lot
Brandon (Drums): I’m sure we all have, Me personally yes. Especially when we haven’t played one in a while. I guess that when you’re on stage, pretend like it’s just a regular practice.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Jonah (Vocals): Silverstein, Simple Plan, Queen, Emmure, Pierce The Veil
Josh (Bass): Bullet For My Valentine & TREX
Chris (Vocals, Guitar): AFI, Alesana, Blaqk Audio, Blessthefall, Sleeping With Sirens, My Chemical Romance, Pierce the veil, Emo bands in general
Brandon (Drums): Like I said, I listen to a lot of different things so it’s hard to pinpoint what would also inspire me.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Jonah (Vocals): "Can you sing?"
Josh (bass): "what Harry Potter house are you?" It's Ravenclaw if you were wondering
13. What do you think of your fans?
Jonah (Vocals): I'm so thankful and they are the reason we do this. They keep us going and keep us passionate. Sometimes it can be draining but the fans make it worth it.
Josh (Bass): I love everyone who takes the time to listen to out stuff and will come out to shows!
Chris (Vocals, Guitar): Honestly, they’re the greatest. Always nice and extremely supportive of our music and the band in general. It’s a small community that's slowly growing but they’re the best and we wouldn’t be doing what we love without them.
Brandon (drums): Love that our fans are also our friends. Everyone knows everyone for the most part.
14. What do you think of our site?
We love the layout, the fact you support so many local bands, and the fact you take the time to interview them. That's super important and this genre's community needs it.
15. Something add?
We have just released our new album, "Codependency." It is streaming on all major platforms and appreciate all the support and great feedback we've been getting. Go check it out!
Thank you to Beneath The Core for this interview!
