Interviews: Dark Serenity
In this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Hard Rock band Dark Serenity from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Our founding member and bassist Zach Barnes created the name to be an oxymoron, to say that
within the worst things in life are also the greatest, and with the promise of death comes one’s
motivation to live each day to the fullest.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We wanted to play our genre because it is raw, authentic, and gritty. There’s a level of self-
expression that we can personally only find within it.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Zach knew Kate (guitar/vox) prior to her joining the group, and later on Kate met Mike (drummer)
with the intention of recruiting him to join the band. Luckily, we all became very good friends and
the lineup stuck.
4. Each band member favorite band?
Zach’s favorite band is Rush, Kate’s is Black Sabbath, and Mike’s is the Foo Fighters.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
We are inspired by the music we listen to, which includes the music that we grew up on as well as
modern music, and the music created by bands in our local scene. We are also inspired by the desire
to live an untethered life of creation and consumption of music.
6. Where was your last gig?
We last played at Lofi in Ann Arbor, MI with our buddies Electric Huldra. There’s nothing like a
hometown show.
7. Where would you like to perform?
We’re shooting for the moon. Our goal is to eventually play large historic venues
nationally/internationally, but definitely historic Detroit/Metro Detroit venues such as The Fox and
The Fillmore.
8. Whom would you like to perform with?
We would love to perform with Highly Suspect, Rival Sons, Wolfmother, and Tyler Bryant and the
Shakedown, as far as modern artists go.
9. Whom not?
I can’t really see us playing with anyone of the radio rock bands such as Bad Wolves, Breaking
Benjamin or anything like that. It’s not our shindig.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Not really. Each one of us has always been able to handle it well. The reason being, is that we are
all able to harness the nervous energy and turn it into excitement and adrenaline. That would be our
advice to beginners, to do that very thing.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
The bands that were the trailblazers of their genres/subgenres are the ones that inspire us the most.
Artists such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and so on.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Personal phone numbers, probably. Nothing too unusual comes to mind in that sense.
13. What do you think of your fans?
We love and appreciate anyone who supports us in any way shape or form. After all, they’re the
ones making what we do possible in the first place.
14. What do you think of our site?
Its rad, the level of inclusion of subgenres is something to be appreciated. Thanks for including us.
15. Something to add?
You can find us on social media to keep up on our whereabouts, as well as find us on every major
online streaming platform. Your support is appreciated.
