Interviews: Mind´s Cove
In this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metal band Minds Cove from Italy. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
MATTEO: I've always been fascinated by how creativity relates both to conscious and unconscious
mind, so I wanted the band name to resonate with this concept. The first ideas came after reading
some research papers, but they sounded more like science talk and I didn't feel an emotional
connection to them. At the time I was listening to Dream Theater's 'The Astonishing' and one of the
songs, 'Heaven's Cove', rung a bell: I immediately imagined a cove where you can be surrounded by
mermaids and sharks, just like beauty and horror dwell together in human mind. Then I changed the
word 'Heaven' to 'Mind' and everyone liked the sound of the newly found name!
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We all love Rock & Metal and the progressive side of this music make us feel free to express
ourselves in many different ways.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
ANDREA: I've spent quite some time with Sergio and Matteo, the latter being my cousin. I've
played with both in different bands and Sergio helped Matteo get the songs out of his head, joining
hands with him and becoming the co-writer. The three of us recorded the songs with a session man
on bass. Basically the band came after the songs: we've had a lot of difficulties and some terrible
experiences, but finally Federico and Alessandro joined us and feeling complete is so great.
4. Each band member favourite band?
MATTEO: Metallica
SERGIO: Metallica
FEDERICO: In Flames
ALESSANDRO: Opeth
ANDREA: Metallica
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
We've all grown up watching videos of our favorite bands, attending at concerts and playing
covers in small venues, so the next logical step was to write new songs. Even if the results may
vary, the feeling of creating something out of nothing is one of the most exciting things we can
share with our heroes.
6. Where was your last gig?
Mind's Cove was born as a studio project, so live shows weren't planned, mostly because of the
founding members' other commitments and the incomplete line-up. Now that we're rehearsing
together and embracing the potential of the songs, we can't wait to play them live as a full band.
7. Where would you like to act?
Anywhere we can feel the joy of participation metal is famous for.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
MATTEO: It would be a dream come true for me to tour with some of my bigger influences. That said, it would be a blast to share this experience with other underground bands.
SERGIO: Metallica, Foo Fighters, Muse, Zakk Wylde.
FEDERICO: Amon Amarth, Alter Bridge, Dream Theater, Twelve Foot Ninja, Amorphis.
ALESSANDRO: Jason Newsted, System Of A Down, Testament, The Omnific.
ANDREA: Malena Mastromarino.
SERGIO: Metallica, Foo Fighters, Muse, Zakk Wylde.
FEDERICO: Amon Amarth, Alter Bridge, Dream Theater, Twelve Foot Ninja, Amorphis.
ALESSANDRO: Jason Newsted, System Of A Down, Testament, The Omnific.
ANDREA: Malena Mastromarino.
9. Whom not?
Any band/artist whose audience would make us feel out of place, although it could be a challenge.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
SERGIO: The first time I played on stage with a progressive rock band I was 15 years old. The
other members were over 25 years old and they had great faith in me, creating real chemistry in the
rehearsal room. This gave me the courage to go on stage and enjoy every moment of that concert...
So, if you believe in your artistic project, give your best in your role and the respect, the faith and
the chemistry reign in your band, you don’t worry: the stage becomes your second home!
FEDERICO: Every time I stand on a stage I feel a lot of adrenaline through my body, not anxiety. It
might play bad tricks on performance, so I focus on my mates to feel comfortable, like I’m playing
in a rehearsal room… with hundreds of people watching!
ALESSANDRO: Just once I actually felt a bit anxious due to the restricted space around me: I
actually “move” a lot while I am playing bass guitar.
I suggest to start playing in front of different puppets in your own room, pretending to be in front of
a very big crowd, full of people who wants to have fun. Also, sunglasses could help.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
MATTEO: Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree.
SERGIO: Metallica, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Joe Satriani, Mr.Big, Megadeth, Europe, Stratovarius, Zakk Wilde and J.S.Bach (the composer!).
FEDERICO: In Flames, Opeth, Stone Sour, Deftones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Eddie Vedder
ALESSANDRO: The Big 4, Opeth, Pink Floyd, Muse, Primus, Death, The Omnific, Jaco Pastorius, Queen.
ANDREA: Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Volbeat.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
FEDERICO: “You know you squint a lot while playing? Put your glasses on!”. I actually should,
but I won’t!
SERGIO: I remember a girl who asked me: “The next concert, will you please put my bra on your
amp?”. How to say “No”...
13. What do you think of your fans?
We're receiving praise from metal and non-metal fans. This makes us very happy, because it proves
there's no need for boundaries.
14. What do you think of our site?
ANDREA: It's so cool! You do really care about rock and its sub-genres, giving unknown bands a
chance to talk about themselves. It feels like we're all connected!
15. Something add?
Thanks for the opportunity and stay tuned for upcoming updates. Here's to a heavier future!
