Interviews: EVA X

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Pop Rock band EVA X from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Eva X started as a mashup of concepts. I’m fascinated by technology and mythology, and at the time I was coming up with the idea, I wanted to play with the concept of a sort of robotic character. I was playing with Ada (for Ada Lovelace, one of the first programmers) and with Eve as ideas, and I hit on Eva and it stuck. The X is merely there to make it sound cool.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

I actually started writing more rock/blues songs, before I really came up with the concepts behind Eva X. A few of my friends introduced me to synths and I got hooked on sound design pretty early on. I also liked creating softer soundscapes – they gave me somewhat more freedom vocally. Hence, Eva X became an electronic project.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

I’m the sole songwriter/studio member of Eva X. I’m bringing my good friend Chris Lacroix along for live playing, though. I’ve known him for a couple years now, and I’m really happy to be bringing a friend on board.

4. Each band member favourite band?

It’s hard to choose one, but I think it might have to be Amorphis. Mainly because I have a tattoo inspired by their artwork.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

I get inspired by a lot of different things. Like a lot of artists, I crib from my own life experiences. Electrowoman is in many ways a snapshot of what was going on in my life at the time I was writing it.

6. Where was your last gig?

I haven’t performed live as Eva X yet. My first performance is on Halloween night, and I’m incredibly excited to finally bring these songs to a stage.

7. Where would you like to act?

There’s a lot of places I would like to play. I’ve never been out of my home province to play, so that’s a big goal of mine with Eva X.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

If I ever got a chance to do a project with either Bjork or Floor Jansen (Nightwish), I’d probably die of excitement on the spot.

9. Whom not?

No jerks, please. Other than that, I don’t judge.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

I used to be so nervous playing shows. It hasn’t quite gone away for me, but the best strategies I’ve ever found are practice and experience. Know your parts, and know them cold. And get used to getting up in front of people. I used to take a guitar and head out to open mic nights to practice playing and singing in front of people. It’s helped a lot.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

I’m incredibly inspired by the women making music in the goth and synth scenes – acts like HIDE, Kanga, and Boy Harsher. In terms of my style and performance, I’m really inspired by a lot of metal bands, especially Nightwish. I want to sing like Floor Jansen when I grow up.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

I haven’t gotten anything weird. Yet.

13. What do you think of your fans?

I’m thrilled to have them. I’m incredibly glad my music has resonated with people.

14. What do you think of our site?

You guys are reminding me how long it’s been since I listened to much metalcore! I’m also super thrilled to see loads of Calgary artists in the band roster. YYC represent!
