Interviews: Shatter Brain
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metal band Shatter Brain from Australia. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
The band name was actually one of the last things that we decided on before we announced the
band! Matt and I, the guitarist with whom I co-founded the band, had written all the music for our
demo and had found the other members but we still didn’t have a name. We each had a list of 50 or
60 potential names but none of them seemed quite right. Then one day I was listening to music on
the bus on the way home from work, and the song “Shattered End” by my other band ALKIRA
came on my iPod. I remembered that this song was originally titled “Shattered Mind”, and that it
was about taking too many psychedelics and feeling like your brain had exploded; that’s when I
thought of the name “Shatter Brain”! Everyone liked it so that was that.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Shatter Brain was formed out of the remnants of a sludge/stoner rock side-project that Matt and I
had started, called “The Kraken”. “The Kraken” was just meant to be a bit of fun so we could jam
on stuff similar to Clutch, Baroness, and Mastodon, but when each of our main bands weren’t
progressing quite as we had hoped, we decided we wanted to take “The Kraken” more seriously.
However, we didn’t want to be pigeonholed into playing the stoner-rock style, so we decided to
change the name and write ‘heavier’ material that we were more passionate about. Most of the
songs on the demo and the EP were written as new “The Kraken” material, so they have more of
that sludge/stoner style, but the newer material has more of the thrash metal, death metal, and old-
school hardcore styles that we love.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Each of us has been involved in the Adelaide metal scene for many years, so we were all connected
in one way or another before we formed the band. Our vocalist Tom took a break from music and
moved away for a while, but he came back to Adelaide just as Shatter Brain was getting off the
ground. Perfect timing!
4. Each band member favorite band?
As a collective we have pretty eclectic musical taste. In terms of heavy music, Tom is primarily into
the more modern ‘core’ stuff, but the rest of us are very much into 80’s and 90’s thrash metal, death
metal, and hardcore/metalcore (Integrity, Merauder, etc). We also love a lot of the new bands that
are combining those influences, like Gatecreeper, Outer Heaven, etc. When we were writing
Pitchfork Justice I think we were all listening to a lot of Power Trip, Slayer, and Crowbar!
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
The love of music is what inspires me to write songs. For me, nothing is better than writing a piece
of music that you makes you feel something, and then seeing other people have that same emotional
response to what you have created.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was in Adelaide, supporting Western Australian HM-2 lords Earth Rot. They just
released their last album “Black Tides of Obscurity” on Season of Mist and it slays. Go check it out!
7. Where would you like to act?
We were really hoping to get over to Europe and the USA this year to support the release of
“Pitchfork Justice”, but that looks unlikely at the moment with this Caronavirus pandemic!
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Metallica!
9. Whom not?
Anyone who acts like a shitcunt.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
I think it is natural to get nervous before you go on stage, but you just need to capture that nervous
energy and put it into your performance! One thing to remember is that (most) people who are there
watching you are there to have a good time, not to judge you and your band, and if you are having
fun on stage then they will have fun watching you.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Crowbar are the reason I play this type of music. More recently,
Black Breath, Gatecreeper, and Kvelertak have been big inspirations.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Not exactly weird, but at the end of an ALKIRA show a topless woman came on stage and asked
for a drumstick to put between her breasts, and she did this! Very nice!
13. What do you think of your fans?
In the short amount of time that Shatter Brain has been a band we have developed a core group of
dedicated fans. We can’t thank them enough for coming out to shows and always buying and
wearing our merch. Hopefully with the release of the album we can build on this fanbase!
14. What do you think of our site?
The Breathing the Core website looks great! It is awesome to find websites like this that support
underground heavy music. Please keep it up!
15. Something add?
