Interviews: Thy Despair
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Dark Metal band Thy Despair from Ukraine. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
When the band was just created in 2006 it was called Thoughts of the Desperate, revealing the sense of despair in its songs. Later the band's genre evolved and music became faster and heavier so the band name was changed to Thy Despair.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We like the music of bands playing dark heavy music with a gloomy atmosphere. However, all band members have different metal music tastes and this is the reason why we mix melodic death and black metal riffs with symphonic sound and academic vocals creating our own unique style.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
In the present lineup, Thy Despair started playing in 2017. Nephilim, Elina, Strike, and Anton already knew each other. Navka and Alex joined a bit later.
4. Each band member favorite band?
Elin (vocal) - 1914
Nephilim (vocal/guitar) - Insomnium
Strike (guitar) - Slayer
Navka (keyboard) - Moonspell
Alex (drums) - Nightwish
Anton (bass) - Sodom
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
We find inspiration in everyday life, inner emotions, traveling, and folktales.
Lyrics of three songs: The Free One, War, and Falcon are strongly affected by the war in the east of Ukraine. It is a great tragedy for the nation and the main idea of these songs is that you should always fight back and keep freedom in your heart and mind. The lyrics of other songs are inspired by local legends or life experience.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was in Volume club (Kiev, Ukraine).
7. Where would you like to act?
This year we would like to visit several Ukrainian open-air festivals and go to a small European tour.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
It would be an honor to play not only with famous bands we are inspired by, like Tristania, Epica, Moonspell, Nightwish, Dimmu Borgir, but also with young bands of similar genres. There are so few bands playing in the same genre as we do.
9. Whom not?
We would like to play with bands of similar styles.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Most of us have been playing on different stages for more than 10 years, so no stage fright we have. Vice versa, the stage is our personal addiction and we can't live without playing our music.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Tristania, Sins of thy Beloved, Draconian, Moonspell, Insomnium and Epica have influenced our music most of all.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Our fans are comparable people and never asked us anything weird.
13. What do you think of your fans?
If a person likes our music this means he likes dark romantic, able to distinguish good from evil, and has a good taste. We would like there were more such people.
14. What do you think of our site?
You are doing the right thing supporting metal music. Keep on going and stay metal.
