Interviews: Volcanova
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Hard Rock band, Volcanova, from Iceland. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
The idea came up in class where they were teaching Sammi about the Icelandic landscape and natural disasters.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Mainly because of how the sound can be big, heavy and powerful.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
No, The band was formed in 2014 by Sammi but Dagur and Steini joined the band in 2017 shortly after meeting Sammi.
4. Each band member favourite band?
We are of course very fond of where it all started, Black Sabbath and most of the older ones. But it's hard to name only one band, we listen to and are influenced by many genres, everything from Neil Young to Mastodon and everything in between.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
As people who love music it gives us a lot of pleasure to write songs that we would like to listen to ourselves, all three of us are very connected when we are writing together and it has never been hard for us. We try to get the best out of every member and challenge each other frequently when it comes to writing riffs and melodies. So always challenging and pushing ourselves a little bit further to get the most out of each other is probably what inspires us the most.
6. Where was your last gig?
We did a live stream at Hard Rock Cafe in Reykjavík last month with Morpholith and Keelrider.. But the one we did before everything went sideways was at Gaukurinn in Reykjavík in February.
7. Where would you like to act?
Some festivals are just cooler than others so it would be a dream to perform at festivals like Desertfest, Roadburn and Psycho Las Vegas to name a few. Would be stupid not to mention Wacken and Hellfest for example.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Queens of the Stone Age would be a dream. So when you read this Josh Homme, please give us a call.
9. Whom not?
Kanye West, so when you read this Kanye West, don´t call us.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
I think each and every one of us has suffered from tremendous stage fright in some point of our career, especially when we were starting out. But now there is always a little tingle and a little stress before every gig, but it´s a good kind of stress that completely disappears when you enter the stage. So just trying to get into the zone and knowing that the stress is going to go away is a good way to cope with the stress, and thinking about how good it will feel after the gig.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
We´ve already mentioned Black Sabbath and Mastodon, and a good fit to be added to the list would be bands like 1000mods, Clutch, Fu Manchu, The Sword, Elder, The Vintage Caravan, Brain Police and Lowrider to name a few.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
One time a strange man came up to Sammi and asked for his socks after a gig.
13. What do you think of your fans?
They´re awesome and the best and without them it would be pointless, they´ve been very supportive by buying our merch and hopefully they will buy our album and keep coming to our shows.
14. What do you think of our site?
We think every platform that is promoting underground bands and music are fantastic and we are very grateful for that. So please keep up the good work.
15. Something add?
Hopefully, you will enjoy our album “Radical Waves” and we can't wait to be back on stage. And remember that life´s a party, then you die.
