Interviews: TREASVRE
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Post-Rock band, TREASVRE, from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their INSTAGRAM.
1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
We definitely took some time figuring out what we wanted our name to be, and it went through a few iterations before we settled on TREASVRE. We wanted our name to have several qualities: it should be poignant, simple, easy to remember and search for later, and also bring some sort of distinct visual to mind. The concept of “treasure” is emotional, whimsical, and tells a story: an adventurous quest for buried secrets, a deep sentimental attachment to a beloved memory or memento, or even the way we feel about the people we cherish most. Ultimately, we wanted our name to reflect our music and the complex, bittersweet, and hopeful message of our songs.
2.Why did you want to play this genre?
Our genre is something we evolved into as we spent time playing together and exploring different musical stylings. All five of us come from different places when it comes to our taste in music: Sam brings the heartfelt lyrics of the folk genre; Evan contributes heavy, doomy elements like the stoner rock he likes to listen to; Sabrina always has to have an 80s new wave-style arpeggiator in the mix; and Julian and Jason bring their love of all forms of rock music into our songwriting process. It really is a hybrid of everything we’ve grown up listening to, but we’ve found that it works well for the songs we want to write and the emotions we try to convey. The cinematic quality of the genre definitely helps to amplify the stories we tell with our music, but we are nevertheless always experimenting with incorporating new influences and seeing where that takes us.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
We’ve all been connected in one way or another for many years. Most of us met in high school, and we’re been playing music and going to shows together since we were teenagers. We’ve been best friends, coworkers, even roommates before we eventually all got together and formed TREASVRE. It’s nice to have our long history as friends to fall back on as a band; there’s so much more tying us all to each other than just the fact that we play music together.
4. Each band member favourite band?
Sam: Emma Ruth Rundle
Sabrina: For me it’s a tie between Depeche Mode and New Order.
Evan: David Bazan
Jason: Coheed and Cambria
Julian: Megadeth
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
We get a lot of inspiration from the silver lining—the hopeful light at the end of the tunnel when we’re going through challenging times. Much of the beauty of life comes from struggle and pain, and so we try to explore the complexity of that duality in our music. We want our listeners to feel a spectrum of emotions, but at the end of the day it’s our own personal experiences and emotions that inform our songwriting.
6. Where was your last gig?
We performed a show recently for California Women’s Music HomeBound Virtual Tour to benefit a local independent venue, The Ivy Room. It was a women-centric lineup streamed online and we were honored to be featured alongside so many amazing artists! Definitely a great experience.
7. Where would you like to act?
We would love to play at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. It’s a beautiful and historic venue where we’ve seen so many of our favorite bands perform. We’d love to experience it from a different perspective!
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
No one specifically, but we would love to play a set as a part of Psycho Las Vegas, an amazing hard rock and metal festival we went to last year. It was a great crowd and a mind-blowing lineup of bands, so we would be thrilled to be a part of it one day.
9. Whom not?
We are open to collaborating and sharing a stage with many different musical styles, as long as the artist is kind and respectful. Ideally we would like to perform with an act that vibes with our music, but we’ve found that many different genres can complement our sound.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Sometimes we get nervous before shows, but once we begin performing all of that tends to melt away. We get really into the music when we’re on stage, and once the crowd gets into it too, it’s pretty easy to just get lost in the moment. Our best advice for someone tackling their stage fright is to rehearse your parts and feel comfortable with your performance, and then let the music take care of the rest.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Radiohead, Blonde Redhead, Trentemøller, At the Drive-In, Pentangle, Modest Mouse, LCD Soundsystem, TR/ST, X Japan, Fall of Troy, Queen, Circa Survive... the list goes on.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Someone recently wanted to commission us to write a birthday song for his 5 year old son. We were flattered, but politely declined. Nothing against birthday songs—we just got weird vibes about the request so decided to pass on the opportunity.
13. What do you think of your fans?
We’ve had so many kind words from fans lately, especially since we released some new music with our latest EPs, Devils / Echoes and Too Late / One of Us. It’s always wonderful to get positive feedback and know that people are impacted by what we create. We love to talk to fans and find out what resonated with them—it really is so interesting to hear people’s different impressions and interpretations of our songs.
14. What do you think of our site?
First of all, love the look of your Instagram! It’s visually interesting but not too busy… a very eye-catching look. And the website is great too! We like the feature where you can discover bands by country—it’s cool to see a site so oriented toward an international audience. We are also excited to be featured on an outlet that’s focused on heavy music, since that’s one of our specialties. Thank you so much for having us, it’s been a really fun interview!
15. Something to add?
Yes! Keep an eye out for two more releases we have lined up through the end of the year, and a music video for our single “Devils” coming soon! We’d love to connect with anyone out there who likes our music, so stay in touch with us on social media: our handle on all platforms is @TREASVREmusic! Feel free to say hi and let us know your thoughts, we love hearing different perspectives on our songs. We hope everyone is doing well out there, and we look forward to bringing you more music soon. Thanks again!
