Interviews: Song Of Anhubis
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock/ Metal band, Song Of Anhubis, from Spain. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1.Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
At first, the band had another name. After several changes in the line-up and a bad period with several unfavourable circumstances, we decided to go ahead with our first album more strongly than ever. It was then when we thought it was convenient to adopt as the name of the band something we could identify with. It was clear to me that I wanted to include a mythological element, as I have been passionate about the subject since I was very young. We decided to include the Egyptian god Anubis, since it symbolizes in a way the rebirth and that dichotomy between light and darkness, something that matched very well with the moment we were in and with the spirit of the band. We put the "h" in-between as a differentiating element. As Anubis is also the god that in a certain way judges the souls and our lyrics are usually about the injustices, the duality of the human being, the rebirth, the light and the darkness...we decided to call our band finally "Song Of Anhubis".
2.Why did you want to play this genre?
Let's say that, although we usually listen to very diverse music, metal is the genre we like the most and therefore what we want to do when we play our instruments. However, I suppose that you can also notice in our music those influences of somewhat different styles that we sometimes listen to. We try not to close ourselves off to anything, there's no need to close our minds, just let the musical notes flow in your head and all sorts of ideas appear. It is not good to put barriers to your creativity and unfortunately, sometimes it is done unintentionally, perhaps having as a main objective to try to reach the maximum audience possible. You may like our music more or less, but it is made from the deepest part of us and we try to make it authentic.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
The band has undergone several changes over the years, but generally, all the members who have come and gone knew each other. I only knew the guitarist (Polvareda) who is the one who originally proposed me to create a band with a gothic metal style of the 90's and early 2000's. So, we started this project between both of us, releasing our first album with that style we were looking for then. Later, once we had acquired experience and consolidated as a band, we decided to go in search of a more own sound and far away from that first album, as you can see in our recent CD “Reversed Reflection”.
4. Each band member favourite band?
Oh, this is a very difficult question to answer. Choosing just one favorite band is practically impossible for us since it depends on the moment and the mood, but let's go there:
Rei: Leprous
Polvareda: Deftones
Mario: Orgy
Jon: Satyricon
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
I am inspired mainly by my own experiences, by issues that affect me or perhaps by the experiences of people close to me. Normally, music is my escape route, the way in which I exteriorize all kinds of feelings, which sometimes are difficult to express with words alone. There is no word or phrase that can substitute a good melody that comes from the deepest part of you when you are inspired or when you feel something very intensely. In fact, that's the perfect time to compose. I always carry a pen and paper with me for any idea I might have wherever I am.
6. Where was your last gig?
In a concert hall called "The Groove", near where we live.
7. Where would you like to act?
Well... Madison Square Garden, for example? Dreaming is free, hahaha
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Buf, the list here is also very long, hahahaha. Some examples would be Leprous (Einar Soldberg), Anneke Van Giersbergen, Ashe O´hara (Tesseract), Chino Moreno, Sonata Arctica, Floor Jansen, Within Temptation, A man-eating Tree, Heart of a Coward.…
9. Whom not?
With artists of any musical style that I don't like. Reggaeton mainly.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
I myself suffered from stage fright at first. Suffering stage fright for someone who wants to devote himself to music is horrible, but if you're also a singer it's much harder because you have to expose yourself much more, there's no escape and nowhere to hide, hahaha. Like it or not, you are the most visible part of the band and the one who should always be in the front line.
The first time I got on stage I couldn't separate my two hands from the microphone stand. It was as if I had them glued together. My legs were shaking, there were too many people down there, but luckily the voice remained intact and although I didn't move too much, I think I did a good show. The most difficult thing is deciding to take that first step where you expose yourself to others for the first time in your life. In my case, I always liked to sing, I think I sang before I said my first words! ha ha ha, but when I was younger, I was too shy and almost nobody had heard me sing before. So, I gathered my courage and decided to face the stage fright at once in front of a lot of people. Now it doesn't happen to me anymore, I love moving all over the stage and not stopping, it was a real liberation!
My advice to those people who don't dare to do something because of stage fright is to please believe in themselves, that they are much more capable than they think and that in the long run, they will regret not taking the step. Whatever you wish to do but don't do out of fear, you must face it. Think that life is short and you have to fill it with as many experiences as possible or with everything that you are passionate about. So much encouragement to all those people and from here all my support.
Show the world that you can do it! 😉
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Our first álbum was inspired by European gothic bands from lately '90-early '00, like Theatre of Tragedy, early The Gathering, Within Temptation…
In our upcoming second album our sound changes and you can see the inspiration in the American nu metal of the 00s, a bit of bands with industrial and electronic sound, a bit power metal, metalcore… it depends a lot on the song we play, the influences will be different.
For my part, I worked hard to expand my vocal range and especially in new vocal techniques that would allow me to evolve and leave lyrical singing more as a resource than as a rule. That also helped a lot to be more versatile when composing the songs.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
I'm usually very close to people, so I've heard all kinds of things, but the craziest one was when someone told me "Do you like to break cars with a hammer?" Even today I don't understand the reason for that question and above all what I was trying to achieve with the answer, hahaha. It's like "Oh, yeah, I do it before I go to work, it's part of my daily exercise routine"
13. What do you think of your fans?
It really is the most important part of the music after the music itself as it is directed at them. Little by little we are having more fans who talk to us on the networks and tell us how much they are enjoying our music. It's something that fills you up and really moves you. It's a very nice feeling to see that something that you have created and in which you have been so involved in all senses, is enjoyed by people of all kinds and from all over the world. Of course, that is one of our main goals and we are very happy to be able to contact people through our music.
14. What do you think of our site?
I think it's a very complete website, well done and organized, with a great deal of different musical content and of all kinds, where you can get lost for hours discovering a lot of interesting bands and even new styles and sub-styles!
15. Something add?
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to have this interview, it has been fun. Hopefully, we'll see you soon at a concert, festival or something similar!
