Interviews: The Design Abstract
We have had the opportunity to interview the Melodic Death Metal/Industrial Metal band The Design Abstract from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
The project was originally just called ‘Design.’ Which is very hard to search for. When it changed from a solo project to a full band, the name was changed to The Design Abstract.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We love orchestral writing in metal, but there’s no reason it needs to sound antiquated or baroque. The combination of melodic death metal, orchestral writing, and synth layers used to emphasize the sci-fi storytelling of the lyrics are all things we feel haven’t been used in this way before. There are definitely bands that use parts of what we’re after, such as the mixed-vocals and melodeath sound of Scar Symmetry, or the massive orchestral backing of Septicflesh, but we have yet to find this sound exists in the specific way we are after!
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Nope! Kijiji can be very hit or miss but sometimes it works!
4. Each band member favourite band?
Voiicide: Dimmu Borgir
Logan: Rush
Matt: Opeth
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Storytelling! And a lacking selection of this type of writing out there in the world! There are many incredible bands that play similar sounds, but nobody that does quite what we do.
6. Where was your last gig?
St. Mary’s Ontario, but we don’t talk about that...
7. Where would you like to act?
If we do ever end up playing shows, Toronto would be cool.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
I recently found a band Divine Disorder who would be awesome to share the stage with
9. Whom not?
Ethereal Void
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
The first “real” show I ever played, I definitely hyperventilated before the show, but it went fine. Through the years I’ve done so many live performances for so many different musical styles that I don’t feel any anxiety or stage fright or really any emotions at all regarding live performance.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Dimmu Borgir and Scar Symmetry are the two biggest influences for me personally. During the early days of Logan joining, we were both influenced by Gojira which you can hear a touch of in spots like the breakdown in Parallel Projection. Matt and I definitely bonded over Scar Symmetry, as well as many other melodeath bands, as well as Opeth.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
CDs of our music
13. What do you think of your fans?
Currently accepting applications
14. What do you think of our site?
I like how you’ve arranged all the bands alphabetically with photo, but I see a distinct lack of The Design Abstract
15. Something to add?
Thank you for reading our words
