Interviews: QILIN

We have had the opportunity to interview the  Stoner Metal/Doom Metalcore band QILIN from France. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or come out just like that?

Ben: The name came from our first jams and tracks. We needed something raw but marvelous at the same time like nature so we’ve looked for a figure of nature and Qilin has appeared.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Thomas: To me, it's the possibility to combine many styles with the Stoner genre. We are free here.

Ben: For the love of it man! We listen a lot to stoner/doom and we also listen to other genres which help us enlarge our horizon. 

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Ben: No. We met thanks to an announcement.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Ben: Sleep

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Thomas: What inspires me is mountain and forest atmospheres. It’s more a distant gaze on the world to me. Musically my inspiration are in post metal/rock, sludge, psych stoner/rock, Space rock, I can quote few bands like Isis (Oceanic era), Thou, Spacelug, Domkraft, My Sleeping Karma, Elder( until Lore), Electric Moon, Earthless or Dead Meadow...

Ben: Geezer has definitely settled the bases of heavy music and other bassists took his legacy more or less. But, in general, we are influenced by what we hear and what we see.

6. Where was your last gig?

Thomas: It was in the Espace B in Paris, France.

7. Where would you like to act?

Ben: I don’t really know! We just want to play for a receptive audience. Doesn’t matter the place.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Ben: Hard to say... We are basically an instrumental band so we don’t really expect to feature with someone but who knows?

9. Whom not?

Ben: Mireille Mathieu!

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Thomas: We do suffer. But, if you are really looking forward playing it live, you forget it quickly. Ben: Just practice your music... On and on! To be sure of your ability to play live. We all naturally have stage fright.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Thomas: Electric Moon, Earthless, Thou

Ben: Black Sabbat, Sleep, Yob, Deftones.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Ben: Nothing unusual.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Ben: We appreciate that they are not weird.
