Interviews: VENUS GRRRLS

We have had the opportunity to interview the  Alternative Rock band VENUS GRRRLS from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or come out just like that?

Lead singer GK’s old instagram handle used to be venusgrrrl, having taken inspiration from the riot grrrl movement and the feminine energy that Venus represents. When it came to choosing the band name this resonated with the rest of us and fit the ethos of the band really well!

2.Why did you want to play this genre?

Within the band we all have a variety of different music tastes but the one we have in common is rock and a love for the riot grrrl scene and the girl bands that existed at this time. All of us being hugely inspired by this era lead us to wanting to play in this genre.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

The band was put together by GK through a Facebook call out. Technically none of us knew each other properly at first and were pretty much strangers when we first played together. However GK and Jess actually went to the same college in Watford and so did Gabby and Hannah in Leeds but without really getting to know each other.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

It’s really hard to pick one favorite but some bands/artists we absolutely love are:

GK - Garbage

Hannah - Nirvana

Gabby - Arcane Roots

Grace - Björk

Jess - St Vincent

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

The inspiration for our lyrics comes heavily from our own personal experiences, which we then generalise in an attempt to make them more relatable to wider audiences. For obvious reasons, Feminism percolates throughout the thematic characteristics of our songs, as well as themes such as mental health, and friendship. Our main goal is to share our own experiences in the hope that that provide any type of comfort or solidarity for anyone else.

6. Where was your last gig?

Exchange Bristol - First tour date and first time in Bristol!

7. Whom would you like to feature with?

A collaboration with Dream Wife or Nova Twi s would be amazing we’ve always admired what they do!

8. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

We’ve all suffered from stage fright at some point as it can be very overwhelming going on stage in front of loads of people and just wanting to do your best. But a lot of the time it’s the anticipation of the gig rather than being on stage, so once we’re up there it’s totally fine! It also helps to be walking on stage with your best mates, knowing you’ve got their support. Just make sure you’re around people who support you and remember to breathe, it’ll be fine once you play that first song!

9. What bands have inspired you the most?

Bikini Kill was a huge inspiration for us at the beginning, the first song we learnt together was Rebel Girl and it kick started the making of Venus Grrrls.

10. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We’ve not actually been asked for anything strange yet! But it still feels weird when people ask for our autograph.

11. What do you think of your fans?

We love them! We’re so grateful for anyone who’s taking the time to listen to our music and come to our shows, we wouldn’t be doing what we’re doing without them.

We’re really grateful to Breathing The Core for taking the time to interview us, we love that you’re getting involved with independent bands and give them a platform to share their story!
