Interviews: Caveat
We have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Metal band Caveat from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or come out just like that?
With the definition of caveat being beware or warning, I thought it was an ominous and unique name for a metal band. I wasn’t there for the naming of the band and I was stoked the band already had a name.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Metal is fun and challenging. We started out with comparatively simple songs and structures and it just kept evolving into this dynamic, prog metal thing we do today.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Greg and I go all the way back to 1999 when we had a band called Stonewater. As we gigged and met many great local musicians with similar goals, we eventually absorbed all the members of the band you see today.
4. Each band member favourite band?
I am a massive Meshuggah fan. I was even a moderator on the official Meshuggah Forum back in the day.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
We all just love writing riffs and jamming. I’m not much of a lyricist, but I’ve written a riff or two for this band. It’s fun and creative. That’s about all I need.
6. Where was your last gig?
It was February 2020 here in Calgary before the proverbial shit hit the proverbial fan
7. Where would you like to act?
I wanna play one of those metal fests on a cruise ship. That’d be awesome
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Again, with any metal band whatsoever on a massive cruise ship.
9. Whom not?
Your mom’s band.
10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Just know that no matter how much you rehearse, your performance will never be perfect.
Also, do whatever you can to mitigate a technical trainwreck. If you play to clicks and tracks, be sure that you can nail the songs well enough without all the studio magic. We call that ‘freeballin’ here in the business. Mo gear mo problems.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
If we’re talking metal bands, then for sure Meshuggah, Opeth, Death, Pantera to name a few
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
No idea man. I haven’t signed any dicks if that’s what you’re asking.
13. What do you think of your fans?
We have a pretty healthy metal scene here in Calgary despite the pandemic. I’m grateful to anyone who’ll come see us do our thing.
14. What do you think of our site?
It has a cool name.
