Interviews: Stinkbrute
This is a new interview with the Grindcore/Slam solo artist Stinkbrute from Portugal. Check out the interview and follow the artist on his INSTAGRAM PROFILE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?
At the time my idea was to have the most ridiculous name I could come up with the
moment and it was Stinkbrute, The Gruesome Exchange of Bodily Fluids That Turned Into a Bile
Duct Titan, later I decided to stick with just Stinkbrute and the rest for the name of the first album.
With all my ideas coming together for the project and turning it into something more serious, there
was another big reason I wanted this name, and It has to do with how little we think of animals, in
specific farmed animals. When I think of Stink-Brute all I can imagine is a pig or a cow in horrible
condition, dirty all around, with anger towards humans, and after we put them in those conditions
we have the audacity to call them dirty, disgusting, or stinky.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Initially, there wasn’t a big reason for me to compose in this style of music besides me just
liking Death Metal and Grindcore, but I later realized that this genre lets me go into any topic I want
regardless of how aggressive and gruesome it may be. I can also be very emotionally invested in
my performance, with screaming I can almost accurately represent what the lyrical subject is
experiencing. For example, in the song Cow Molesters, I want to portray my outrage at the dairy
industry, so, screaming, fast drums, and heavy guitars that is my preferred way to show my
defiance towards those disgusting practices.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
The band is formed only by myself, Bernardo Rebelo.
4. Is each band member's favorite band?
I personally don’t have a favorite band as I am constantly finding new bands that I love and
can’t really decide which ones I like more. But to name a few that have been my favorites in the
past couple of years, Meshuggah, Daughters, and Wormrot.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Besides other musicians, I get inspired by a lot of anime and manga, mostly gore stuff like
Chainsaw Man and Berserk. I get really into those kinds of worlds and that sparks up my creativity
to create stories of my own.
Other than that I am very interested in animal rights and I watch a lot of documentaries
about it. I feel like in Stinkbrute a lot of my inspiration comes from that, some of the atrocities done to animals can’t be unspoken and in a genre such as Grindcore, I have the freedom of
really pushing those issues to the maximum without feeling out of place or forced. Some of the
aggression in my songs and mainly my vocal performance come from the emotions I feel having
to live in a world of such injustice towards animals, humans or not because after all, we’re still
animals.
6. Where was your last gig?
I am yet to play Stinkbrute live.
7. Where would you like to perform?
I would like to perform anywhere in the world as I am a geography geek, but besides
everywhere, there are festivals like Wacken or Barroselas Metalfest that I would be thrilled to go
and play there.
8. Whom would you like to perform with?
Wormrot, Napalm Death, and Converge would be crazy! There are other bands I would
really like to perform with but there are too many to count.
9. Whom not?
To be honest, I would perform with anyone, regardless of genre, I’m always searching for
the unexpected.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat
that?
I don’t believe I have ever suffered from that, but as long as everything is well-rehearsed
and the equipment is in good shape, the shows tend to go well.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Besides all the others I’ve mentioned so far I should add that Metallica, Slipknot, Cradle Of
Filth were some of the first ones that really got me into metal.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Unfortunately, I was never asked anything weird by a fan.
13. What do you think of your fans?
I don’t believe I have reached the stage of having an actual fanbase, but when I do, I know
they’ll be wonderful people.
14. What do you think of our site?
Looks cool and has tons of content! Great!
15. Something to add?
Stinkbrute’s debut album is available everywhere and more stuff is already in the making so
be sure to check out the album and stick around for more. I wish everyone a wonderful day, keep
spreading peace, love, and compassion to all beings!
