Interviews About Albums: Silurian - End Of Ordovicia (2022)

In this new interview, we sat down with the American Blackened Death Metal solo artist Silurian to ask some questions about their new album "End Of Ordovicia"

1. What can you say about this new EP?

Hey, Lucas here, thanks for the interview! We're excited to finally release the Silurian EP through Ordovician Records, a collaboration between Notsch and myself to release underground/experimental/metal. "End of Ordovicia" is now available for pre-order and will be officially released next Bandcamp Friday, September 2.

2. What is the meaning of the EP name?

The concept is based on the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinctions, in which Earth lost 85% of its species.

3. Which one is the composer of the EP?

I wrote the songs and initially hashed out ideas for "End of Ordovicia" and "Gondwanian Sacrifice" with Patrick a few years ago. I came back to it over lockdown, wrote the last song, "Eurypterid Emperors" we recorded the music. Notsch then wrote the lyrics and built the concept. We sent the lyrics to Dylan to track vocals however he imagined, which really brought the songs to life.

4. If you have to pick one song, which one would you pick?

Probably "Eurypterid Emperors." It's the most adventurous of the three songs. It leans into more riff-oriented death metal in the first half then it builds up to this massive melodic ending, fitting for the end of the story and the EP.

5. Is there a special message in this EP?

If there is what it is? Simply, we just found it to be a fascinating concept. The midwest is home to the Driftless Valley, a geologically unique area never covered by glacial ice during the last ice age. There are cave systems hundreds of millions of years old, revealing some of Earth's ancient histories and endless inspiration for metal concepts.

6. Are there some lyrics that you´d love to share?

I was thrilled to have Notsch contribute lyrics to this EP. They are concise yet paint a vivid picture of that tumultuous time. Here are the lyrics to the second song, "Gondwanian Sacrifice". Are we sinking? / Colossal depths in a cosmic blink / Is our perception shifting? / Our listing masses / Reduced to silt/pulsing tides and unrelenting ascension / Terrestrial pioneers pierce the surface / A conquest begins upon dry land / Flora follows this unfamiliar journey / Proliferation beyond these swamps and seas.

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

This EP only came together through the contributions of every member: Patrick's unrelenting drumming, Notsch's lyrical, conceptual, and artistic vision, and Dylan's intense vocal delivery. Having worked with each of them on other projects I trusted their creative input and felt it came out better because of it. Additionally, thanks to Adam Tucker of Signaturetone Recordings for capturing the aura in recording and Rotten Fantom for the phenomenal cover art.

8. Something to add?

Thanks again to Breathing the Core for the interview and thanks to anyone who's picked up the Silurian EP. You can follow any news about Silurian and upcoming Ordovician releases on Instagram: @ordovicianrecords
