Interviews: Odinfist
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Heavy Metal band, Odinfist from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Jessie Valstar: Back in high school when the band was created, a friend of ours (who was technically our singer) just kind of made it up on the spot one day. It sounded just crazy enough to replace the original name “Rapscallion”.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Jessie Valstar: The gods of music use our abilities to play instruments as a conduit to put the music into the world that needs to be there. It just so happens that the four of us produce traditional metal. We take what is given to us and do our best to share it.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Jessie Valstar: I didn't know anyone before the band really. I moved from a different province just before grade 12 started and Bretton Melanson (former drummer of Odinfist) invited me to play bass for the band upon introducing himself on the first day of school. Tyler, Bradley, and Justin have been friends since they were children I think.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
Jessie Valstar: Literally changes every week. This week is Electric Callboy, and last week was The Falcon.
Tyler Anderson: AC/DC
Bradley Caulien: Toehider, Ayreon, and Haken
Justin Ketterer: Hardest question ever. Never know how to answer. Very subjective, depending on the day. Sublime, Bad Religion, and…Venom?
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Jessie Valstar: When a sick riff is produced while jamming, (music gods conduit as formerly mentioned) I try to work with that riff to make it into something. Sometimes when we stumble upon something as a band at practice, we kinda drop everything and focus on building the song right then and there. There are times we sit in a riff for years before it actually turns into something. All riffs will end up somewhere!
6. Where was your last gig?
Jessie Valstar: We did a hometown show here in Armstrong for the local food bank before Christmas. It was a smashing show with tons of people having a great time! We raised a good amount of money and donations!
7. Where would you like to act?
Jessie Valstar: I don't understand the question
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Jessie Valstar: I would like the opportunity to play with 3 Inches of Blood again if they ever un-retire. The band was my life in high school!
9. Whom not?
Jessie Valstar: I mean, As much as I'd love to see an Odinfist/Redfoo North American tour, I don't think it would be realistic.
10. Have any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Jessie Valstar: Yeah, I totally have been crazy nervous before the start of a show. Honestly, the build-up to an event where people are going to watch you perform something you worked really hard at can feel as if you are standing in the shallow of a beach staring up at a giant wave about to crush you. don't run from the wave, dive into it.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Jessie Valstar: Iron Maiden, those guys rule. They put out quality music and have fun on stage. something I literally strive for every day.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Jessie Valstar: To go on a 2am side by side adventure up into the hills at a festival. I didn't even blink I was in that thing so fast. The problem was I forgot a jacket, my phone was almost dead and I had no idea who the guys were. We went deep into the mountains before I realized this could be bad news for me.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Jessie Valstar: They are the best people in the entire world. Full Stop.
14. What do you think of our site?
Jessie Valstar: I love the idea of getting bands to explain their tracks, track by track. That's radical. You get really cool insight into what bands think and what inspires them for their music.
15. Something to add?
Jessie Valstar: Thank you for the interview, and for featuring us on your site!
