Behind The Tracks: Vulgarithm - Fist (Single) (2023)
"Fist" is the first single from Vulgarithm, it is from the yet-to-be-released upcoming album in 2024, but it has been a live staple for almost a year now. The story behind the song "Fist!" back in 2021, lockdowns were slowly becoming a thing of the past and people were once again going out in public. Unfortunately, 2 weeks before Vulgarithms live public debut, I caught the coronavirus and had to be isolated. It was during that isolation period that 75% of the upcoming album was recorded, including the finishing touches and the idea of "Fist!".
Contrary to a more experimental trilogy of EPs, I had found the direction that Vulgarithm needed to go. It was more of a refined sound that I had christened "Riff Rave" just a year before, and "Fist" would be the introduction of that new direction.
There is no real background to the lyrics, it is purposefully ambiguous so the listener can add their own meaning to it, but it is the musical equivalent of Quagmire from Family Guy pulling beads off camera, "The kids don't know what's going on, but the grown-ups do, don't we?". It's not enough for just fun catchy lyrics to draw you in, it's the core principles of Riff Rave which will be rife in the upcoming album, and each one appears in this song, the big riff, the huge pounding beat, the sense of chaos with grounded synths to keep the dance going.
The youtube video has had 7 times as many views in a week as the previous highest-viewed video had in its lifetime, so it's safe to say you haven't heard the last of this.
