Charlie isn’t a real person. She’s a sort of fantasy, an imaginary friend. Pop music is a sort of heightened language, it doesn’t really deal with the more mundane aspects of life, the washing up or cleaning the bath. There's a lot of longing in the song...so many songs are about human connection, and this one is about that too. The best songs express a simple idea that is very emotive. 'Lean On Me' by Bill Withers, 'Satisfaction' by The Stones, 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' - these are all universally understood. I think the best songs connect with people, our frustrations and disappointments, and our need to belong. I'm trying to write those sorts of songs.'
