Interviews About Albums: Nicholas Ross - Paper Sails (2023)

In this new interview, we sat down with the UK Metal artist Nicholas Ross to ask some questions about their new album "Paper Sails". 

1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?

This new EP is my favorite material so far. I feel like the riffs, solos, and production all combine to create my most cohesive, heaviest music yet. The 2 singles released so far perfectly encapsulate the tone of the EP: Heavy with ambient layers and sound design weaved throughout.

2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?

The EP was named after track 4: 'Paper Sails'. The title actually came from the artwork I created of an origami boat in the pouring rain. I found the artwork particularly impactful and decided to make it the title of the EP.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?

With this Nicholas Ross release I wrote, recorded, programmed, mixed, and mastered the whole project myself between 2022 and 2023.

4. If you have to pick one song, which one would you pick?

My favorite song on the EP is 'Paper Sails'. The riffs are incredibly fun to play and I really enjoyed recording and mixing the track. I also love the guitar solo.

5. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

In terms of inspiration for this EP, I am a massive fan of bands like Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium, Sylosis, Architects, Meshuggah, and Opeth. This mixture of metalcore, djent, and death metal has heavily influenced the way I play my instruments and write my songs. On the other hand, I'm a huge fan of electronic and ambient music which is apparent when you listen to the various, synths and layers in the background of each track on the EP.
