Interviews: SOVEREIGN COUNCIL
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metal band, SOVEREIGN COUNCIL from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Our name comes from the Sovereign Council, a governmental body established by France in April 1663 for administering New France, its colony centered in what is now the St. Lawrence Valley of Canada.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
This is just the genre of music that we grew up loving and the project just formed from there.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
When the band was formed the two founding members (Chris and Alex) had been making music together for years. Lisa and Chris are cousins and have known each other all of their lives. The others were all auditioned for the band and we became close friends over the years. Now we are like family.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
Chris - Gojira, Devin Townsend.
Lisa - Devin Townsend, Architects, Within Temptation
Joe - In Flames, Devin Townsend, Evergrey
Shaun - In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Bad Omens
Brandon - Make Them Suffer, Motionless In White, Architects
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Our life experiences and emotional release is the main inspiration for us to write music. It’s very therapeutic and the joy we get from seeing others enjoying it is immeasurable.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was at The Brass Monkey in Ottawa opening for Powerglove.
7. Where would you like to act?
I think we would all love to perform at Wacken. It would be a dream come true for us.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
I personally (Chris) would like to perform with Devin Townsend. That would be amazing. Delain, Nightwish, Kamelot, Within Temptation, and Lacuna Coil would be an awesome experience for us as well.
9. Whom not?
Any band that is difficult to share the stage with. Other than that, we are open to performing with any band.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Yes! I was extremely terrified and it took years and lots of shows for me to get over it. I still get anxious before a show but as soon as I’m on stage a calm feeling washes over me and as soon as the crowd reacts positively to our music the excitement and adrenaline take over. My tip for beginners is to just keep doing it. Keep performing. Experience will chase away stage fright over time.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
For me personally (Chris) without Metallica I would not have started learning guitar, so I have to give them credit there. Lately, Gojira has been my largest personal influence although you won’t hear that from listening to Sovereign Council.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
I would have to say fans asking for our personal cell phone numbers is probably the weirdest thing I’ve experienced.
13. What do you think of your fans?
I love them. I know we all do. Without them, a lot of the joy of this project would be gone. They are so supportive and encouraging and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Honestly, we are extremely lucky and grateful to them!
14. What do you think of our site?
Breathing The Core is a great website to discover new music from all around the world. Thank you for the interview and all that you do for the scene.
15. Something to add?
Check out our new EP “World on Fire” out on May 5th, 2023!
