Interviews About Albums: GREH - Reversion Of The Repressed (2023)

In this new interview, we sat down with the German Death Metal/Doom Metal/Sludge Metal band GREH to ask some questions about their new album "Reversion Of The Repressed"

1.What can you say about this new CD?

The fact we are most proud of, besides the music, is that everything you see is self-financed and self-released, and apart from mix and artwork, the record is also entirely self-produced. That also goes for the music video to the song “Sanctification”.

All lyrics in the upcoming EP "Reversion Of The Repressed" are autobiographical and reflect different phases from our lives. We process themes of loss, grief, depression and ultimately healing. Not only writing the music but also the lyrics has a therapeutic, creative purpose for us.

The sound of the upcoming EP is embedded with dark emotions and anger. The pain of trauma and the abysses of humanity frame the minimalist sound with only a guitar, drums and vocals. With only two instruments and the plaintive vocals, this EP manages to create its own sound that combines suffering and heaviness with groove and dissonance.

2.What is the meaning of the CD name?

The EP title "Reversion Of The Repressed" means the lightning-fast reliving of the past. This does not only mean the classic flashbacks, where people briefly feel like they have been transported back in time, which they are also aware of afterwards. This kind of flashback is mainly found after a shock trauma, for example with war veterans who throw themselves on the ground because somewhere a car exhaust bangs. In this type of flashback, memories are suddenly triggered and are so strong that those affected feel like they are happening NOW. Exactly this feeling had us very busy and we used the music to process it.

3.Which one is the composer of the CD?

All instruments and lyrics were composed by me (Gero) and recorded and produced in my home studio with Martin and Monne. It was mixed and mastered in Italy by Dorian Falconeri. Everything is DIY – that is what we prefer.

4.If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

To be honest, I like the lyrics of all the songs and I like to listen to them more often than I thought. My favorite song keeps changing. Currently my favorite song is "Inhumed To Forget" because we plan to record a music-video for it.

5.Is there a special message in this CD? If there is what it is?

Do you know the liberating feeling after a self-healing, after a heavy suffering, grief or depression? This is exactly what the EP "Reverson Of The Repressed" is about. It is the liberating blow from your gloomy inner agony!

6.Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

It's actually very difficult to decide. Currently I like a text passage from the song "Age Of Resentment II". Here is the excerpt: "... dark smoke, broken mirrors, hopes and fears all left behind, there′s nothing left to leave in a dark world we will believe, mass destruction of innocent lives, tears to hunderts of mother's eyes! ...

7.Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank specially?

I have to thank my life partner Kath, who had a lot of patience with me and motivated me to make metal music. I also want to thank Martin (vocals) and Monne (drums) for being mad enough to do GREH with me. In addition, I would like to thank all fans, friends, family, bands, promoters, bookers, producers, artists, journalists, designers and photographers for their support. Without your help, GREH wouldn't have been half as good.

8.Something to add?

Thank you for your exciting questions, and I hope that your readers will enjoy this interview. A very last word: support concerts, because only together we can continue to build the underground scene!
