Interviews: SUPERLYNX
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Psychedelic Doom Metal band, Superlynx from Norway. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
We talked about ideas for a while and ended up with the name Superlynx because we wanted a link to nature in our band name. The lynx is both beautiful, big, wild, and fierce but also very shy and rare, and it has its name from the latin word for light, “lvx” because of its super luminous eyes. We felt this was a very suitable reference to both our music and lyrical themes.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We didn’t really decide to play a specific genre, but we knew that we wanted to play heavy music with patience, meditative tendencies, and free expression. We also knew that we have a love for a lot of different music and that we wanted to have an open view of what our music would develop into rather than limit ourselves to any genre rules. Our music is just who we are and what we come from.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Yes, Ole and Pia had already known each other for several years and also played together in a band before.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
Pia: I find it almost impossible to pick only one, I feel it depends on life era, mood, season, the different ways the music hits me, etc. But I would say that maybe Black Sabbath, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and Om are a few of the bands that have been the most influential to me and that I can always listen to.
Daniel: The Cure
Ole: It depends on the mood and time of my life. I find there is no one above Billie Holiday, and I also have to mention Stengte Dører & Cypress Hill.
Espen: Black Sabbath
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Life, what we go through, nature, the universe, music, people, the art of all kinds
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was at Kulturkirken Jakob, a gorgeous old deconsecrated church in the middle of Oslo that is now used for concerts and other cultural events. It is also the main venue for Oslo´s brilliant Høstsabbat Festival. We played there at the band Funeral´s 30th anniversary gig in April 2022. Since then we have been focusing on the new album but are looking very much forward to playing live again soon.
7. Where would you like to act?
If you mean perform our music it is everywhere where there is a good venue and good people. We have played a lot more in Norway than abroad but would love to play more outside our own country.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Any band we may have some sort of musical connection with and who are nice people.
9. Whom not?
Any bands who front or support racism, nazism, homophobic, transphobic, or sexist views, discrimination, and narrow-minded hate in general. We don’t want anything to do with it, and it is very important to us to take a stand against it.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Yes, most of us get a bit nervous before going on stage, but not as much as before. After doing it more and more it feels like the body has learned it will be fine – not only will you survive the experience, which can be really frightening, but you will even usually have a really great time. Of course, preparing the best you can for things to go well and doing the small rituals you need to get ready, warm up, etc helps. And of course, finding a calm place and taking some deep breaths before you go on.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Hard to pick a few, but probably Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Om, Earth, and Neurosis
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Hmm, probably permission to send dickpicks and to sign their breasts.
13. What do you think of your fans?
The ones we have met or gotten messages from have all been really lovely.
14. What do you think of our site?
It is cool. Thanks for supporting music and underground bands.
15. Something to add?
We are releasing some new music soon and an album this fall so stay tuned!
