Interviews: THE UNDER
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Post-Metal/Metal band, THE UNDER from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
The name of the
band was planned, for the most part. The lyrics of the band are mostly about thoughts and feelings that live
underneath our common everyday interactions. Hence, The Under.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
For me, metal has always been the best vehicle to convey a variety of
emotions and modes of expression. It also allows for the incorporation of different genres, which is not a
hallmark of most types of music.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
The bass player Ben is a lifelong friend of mine. I met
Adam a few years back online when searching for a drummer for this project.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
Honestly, it’s impossible to have a favorite band when you have played
music as long as we have. But our favorite genres include metal, punk, hardcore, jazz, funk, hard rock, prog
rock, and hip-hop.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
The very act of emoting and expressing through music is its own
inspiration. I owe a great deal to the various artists I have listened to over the years. But if playing live and
connecting with an audience weren’t as much fun as it is, I’d likely be doing something else!
6. Where was your last gig?
At a place called The Jungle Community Music Club in the Boston area back on
May 7 th. Our next is at the Midway Café in Boston on May 30th.
7. Where would you like to act?
I’m not sure what the nature of this question is, but I’m going to go with “either
on a stage or in front of a camera!” We’re not into acting much, I’m sorry to say.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
We’re not picky about who we play with. All we ask is to play with
bands who take their music as seriously as we do. Everything else is up to fate.
9. Whom not?
Again, no one in particular.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Oh, yes.
You’re probably not serious about your craft if you don’t suffer from some sort of stage fright. The key is to be
prepared and enjoy the moment despite what might be going on around you. That usually comes with
experience, however.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Speaking for myself, I can safely say Black Sabbath, Rush, and
Led Zeppelin are the bands that made me want to do this.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
I once had a fan ask if we didn’t mind sending
some clips of hair for some sort of pagan ceremony. I politely declined.
13. What do you think of your fans?
They’re great folks who don’t just love metal but love all the expressive
arts. It’s great connecting with them on various things.
14. What do you think of our site?
I really like the focus on the genre-hopping identity you folks are gunning for! It’s
not unlike our approach to songwriting.
15. Something to add?
First, I’d like to say thanks to Breathing the Core for reaching out to The Under for this
interview. Secondly, please have folks visit us at https://linktr.ee/theunderband so folks can see where our
music and other media live on the World Wide Web!
