Interviews: Widow's Peak

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Death Metal/Technical Death Metal band, Widow's Peak from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Our original rhythm guitarist and I both have actual widow's peaks, and one day I mentioned it after practice and it just jumped out as a cool name.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

When I was 10 years old I swore an oath that I would either invent Bitcoin or become a millionaire through music. I was too stupid for computer work, and now rent is due so please buy our record.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Not really, we pretty much all met through the band. Pat (drums) and I knew Alyxx (bass) from her other band, Wasted Heretics, but that was a pretty loose association before she joined us.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Travis - The Dillinger Escape Plan

Chris - The Sugarcubes

Mack - Pearl Jam

Alyxx - Faith No More

Pat - Meshuggah

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

These days it's mostly literature, personally. Authors like Louis-Ferdinand Celine, Julia Kristeva, and Yukio Mishima really have an infectious way of recontextualizing the world around us.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was here in our hometown of Calgary, at a venue downtown called The Palomino, with First Fragment and our friends in Stench Of Death.

7. Where would you like to act?

I think the next step for us is to head down into the States. Beyond that, we'd really love to play anywhere in South America.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

The nice thing about traveling to play shows is that we're exposed to so many new bands. I wouldn't want to interfere with that process by trying to influence it too much. Sunless, Entity, The Hallowed Catharsis, Truent, Protosequence, and Art Of Attrition are all great examples of bands we've gotten to play with by pure happenstance.

9. Whom not?

There's always been a lot of sexual tension between myself and Arrival Of Autumn, so I think I'd have to turn down touring with them out of respect for our spouses.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Yeah, I think everyone gets a little from time to time. I don't think there's a magic bullet-type answer for that, other than to practice. Getting on stage, being vulnerable, public speaking, socializing, etc, are all skills that require practice. The last few years of quarantine really set some people back in their social skills, but it's just a matter of practice to get more comfortable.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

It would be difficult to overstate the impact Death had on me as a teenager. Beyond that, I think Captain Beefheart, The Sugarcubes, Gorguts, and Lifelover have all had a dramatic influence on what form music can take for me, personally.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

There was a girl who wanted me to drink from a tube she used to butt-chug mead. I politely declined, god bless her.

13. What do you think of your fans?

We're fortunate enough to play relatively diverse music, so meeting fans is usually a pretty insightful and rewarding experience. Different people tend to appreciate different things about our music, so hearing what clicks with people is interesting, and often leads to some pretty deep conversations. The people that take the time to talk with us after shows or online are usually really kind people and we're very fortunate to be surrounded by them.

14. What do you think of our site?

It's great! I'm really impressed at how comprehensive the genre list is. I'm currently checking out the power-violence releases you've covered!

15. Something to add?

Turn off your AC if you're driving through a thunderstorm! Your chances of getting struck go up if you have it on.
