Track By Tracks: King Of The Dead - Perdition (2023)

1. The Sermon For The Cursed:

The opening to Perdition is an introduction to The Cursed Ones. They make an appearance at the end of the previous EP, The Summoning. It is a glimpse into their dark past as members of a mysterious centuries-old organisation. Their relentless pursuit of the cult of The Sign has led to vicious acts of brutality across the ages.

The EP picks up in Spain in 1501; having heard rumours about heretics trying to perform The Summoning and conjure The Sign with an ancient ritual in a remote village, The Cursed Ones go to investigate. Sickened by their discoveries, they destroy all witnesses of the depravity they find.

2. The Hunt:

It is now the present day. The Cursed Ones have descended upon Kur City, moved by ethereal stirrings of The Sign. They move in the shadows, investigating the darkest and most depraved corners of the city. They follow whispers, piecing together information until they feel the convergence of two worlds. The Summoning has been performed. They were too late to stop it, but they now know who is responsible: their old advisory, The Familiar.

3. Courage:

In the immediate aftermath of The Summoning, Amos has been taken away by The Familiar. Together, they wind through tight backstreets, fleeing the carnage they have left behind. The Familiar has revealed that he manipulated Amos, but he has no option but to follow him now. Amos, still reeling from the amnesia caused by The Summoning, tries to make sense of what is happening. Where has he been? What are these new powers he seems to have?

Meanwhile, Nessa manages to evade a confrontation with The Cursed Ones. Now a fugitive as a witness to the brutal aftermath of the ritual, she makes an escape into the night to further investigate the night’s events.

4. Who’s Left To Blame:

As we delve deeper into his origins, we learn that The Familiar was given unnatural life through his own botched attempt at The Summoning in the early 1900s. He lost everything he ever cared for and descended into madness. Ever since that lowest point of his existence, he has been searching endlessly to find a way to perform the ritual and enact his revenge on the malevolent spirits that destroyed his life a century ago.

5.Crawl:

Drawing comparisons between The Cursed Ones and The Familiar, we learn of the hideous mental and physical changes they suffered that led to their current forms. The Cursed Ones lost their humanity through the pursuit of righteousness, but have since become a bleak reflection of duty superseding morality. The Familiar is a husk of his former self, having sacrificed everything for his obsession.

6. When It All Comes Down:

In this coda to the events in Perdition, The Cursed Ones are pursuing The Familiar and Amos. The Familiar is one step closer to achieving his goal of confronting The Sign, and Amos is making sense of his newfound powers. All the while, Nessa continues to investigate these grisly events; is her friend still alive?

The King of the Dead story will continue next year.
